I'm on a training course, and during my lunch break today I took a wander up the road. I came across a Church of Christ, Scientist building. I've not heard of this church before, so I had a look at their website, and as far as I can tell they believe strongly in faith healing.

Does anyone else know anything about them, or have any opinions on them?

It's Christian Science, as in Mary Baker Eddy, et al.

It's the place where they pray instead of get you a doctor.

Yes, it's the name which practicioners of Christian Science prefer to call their organization, for whatever reason.

Not having actually read any Christian Scientist texts, the basic gist of it is that disease and whatnot were not created by God but are instead merely illusions which you can overcome, and that the healing miracles Jesus performed were not one-time tricks but are in fact something anyone can do.

And yes, the practical upshot of this is that Christian Scientists are somewhat prone to avoid real medicine, which can be problematic.

On the upside, The Christian Scientist Monitor is apparently a pretty good newspaper and the Mapparium they have at the Mary Baker Eddy library in Boston is pretty neat.

Had a friend that was CS. Note "had". He died of cancer at 45.

Remember, it's OK to pray as long as you don't ask for anything or expect anything to happen. (that should be my sig.)

Invented by a NH native! That and the worst president the US has ever had (though Bush is trying for the title), our state is so proud.

Many insurance companies pay the costs that Christian Scientists incur when they have to pay a practicioner to pray for their healing! There have also been many deaths of children as well as adult Christian Scientists.

Didn't some judge somewhere recently say that 'Christian Science' is an oxymoron?

Well, that's one way to solve the health care crisis...instead of going to the dr, we can just pray. It will also stop overpopulation as a side effect.

The Christian Science Monitor is actually an excellent paper. Go figure.
