View Full Version : Evaluating Paranormal Claims

One of the things that continually amazes me is that people who believe in the paranormal think so small.

If you have a working perpetual motion device, you shouldn't be worrying about a million dollar prize. If it really works, show it, and in a few months you'll be deciding whether to take the straight swap - the patent rights for, say, Australia - or to go for 10% of the gross, which might only earn you a hundred billion dollars in the first year, but should ramp up fast.

If you can see inside people down to the molecular level and diagnose their illnesses, you could easily be charging a thousand dollars for a ten-minute consultation. Probably more.

If you can demonstrate that homeopathy works, well, the world pharmaceutical market is half a trillion a year, it's yours for the taking, and your costs are, basically, zero, so it's pure profit. What are you waiting for?

According to information posted here (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?postid=1374072#post1374072), someone claiming this ability is already charging roughly 6.5 times what proper doctors charge.

Oh, but that would be so ... commercial. I'm in it for the good of humanity. My largesse knows no bounds. Therefore, I'm going to give it all away.

Does that explain it, or are you still missing the part where I actually give away something ... uh ... tangible?

People are already selling homeopathic remedies. Remember, to be a commercial success, it is only necessary to convince people that they're worth buying, not to demonstrate to anyone that they work.

As I understand it, it's a quite-profitable industry.

An infinite number of vials of remedy from only one chicken liver. Now that's profitable!
