And as for Nixon's stated reason -- that the force should more "reflect" the community -- all I can say is . . . No, I can't say even that.
If our police force is to "reflect" the community in its make-up, then it should not only be 52 per cent female, but include lots of children, plenty of senior citizens, convicted killers, lots more Toorak residents, and a whole heap of people who -- like most of us -- don't actually want to be police.
In fact, the force comprises the kind of people who dream of being police in the first place. And that usually means, as it always has in every land, men.
The female head of the Victorian Police is to deliberately make the proportion of women on the Police force larger with positive discrimination.
