Ok, so I was wondering if anyone else have this problem:
Thursday I bought a camera, the mentioned JVC Everio GX-MG50, for the sole purpose of starting to make small videostreams and photos for the www (For this purpose and homevideo the quality is sufficient, even if it's not the Pro-Sumer/Pro quality I'm used to and the button placement sucks for some parts) and I'm immensely happy with it.
Just one problem: THe camera records in a MPEG-2 format called MOD.
This means that when I try to run it in anything, even the included PowerDirector Express NE, to edit, I get a "Invalid Fileformat" box. Annoying.
Now the official sentiment is that I have to run it past a converter first, but that have the unfortunate sideeffect of having to recompress and thus compromising the quality. (IT's the same for still: DON'T recompress ANYTHING untill you are completely finished. Work in a lossless inviroment like PSD or TIFF for stills).
I found a solution (Rename the *.mod fileextension to *.mpg and installed an AC3 layer for audio. Now there's no problem. Even set up a batch converterfile for the renaming part.
But I would really like simply being able to import the darned thing directly, so I was wondering if anyone access to/ a link to a place where I can find the Mod-Codec or a way of associating the *.mod extension with the MPG driver automaticly from windows?
Please note that the inner workings of win XP in regards to that kind of work are NOT my favorite.

From the JVC website it looks like you're going to have to buy the 'optional' software Pixela Capty DVD (http://www.pixela-1.com/capty_dvd2/index.htm).

But that only works with mac and I'm on a WinTell platform......

So it is...whoops...Looks like you're stuck with renaming the file extensions then - doesn't look like this is losing any quality.

No, there isn't any quality loss since I'm merely changing the extension and not recompressing it, but still:
Dang.

I think I'll put up a package with the nescesarry tools for other Everio owners when my site goes up again.......

The TMPGE stuff will author that stuff natively.

You can convert it to any other format with TMPGEenc.
