It's happened before. And all they showed was the stupid camel stick! They never showed the Prophet, his wife, daughters or sons in law!

I was living in DC when the terrorits staged the take over. It wasn't funny, but people seem to have forgotten all about it. Over a dumb movie that WAS careful in the depictions.

Finally, when the film was scheduled to premier in the U.S., another Muslim extremist group staged a siege against the Washington D.C. chapter of the B'nai B'rith under the mistaken belief that Anthony Quinn (http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=107297) played Mohammed in the film, threatening to blow up the building and its inhabitants unless the film's opening was cancelled

Wow. Interesting that the trouble was fanned by false information, and here we are 30 years later with exactly the same thing happening (the muslim cleric who helped kick off the current trouble appears to have augment the original cartoons with some extra-special ones of his own).
Although mind you if they were making such a fuss over a straightforward depiction of Mohammed in a film then I suspect the extra cartoons weren't needed.

John Simpson (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4685886.stm) suggests that Egyptian FM Ahmed Aboul Gheit was most likely responsible for the publicity:

As early as November, he was protesting about the cartoons, and calling them an insult.
