Why do Southerners want to secede from the United States?
Near where I live in southern California, there's a house with a Confederate flag on the outside. The idea of a person wanting to secede when they don't live in the South seems like an oxymoron.

I live in the south, yet I don't want to secede. How can this be?

Why a topic about this and Scotland, but not about Quebec seceding from Canada?

Better - someone in Southern California flies a flag and from that the entire South wants to secede.

Oh come on, guys. Get a life. I like JAR's newest threads, and I've been tempted to start my own threads of this nature from time to time, but never have. He is asking legitimate questions about things he obviously does not completely know about or understand but wants to understand. I think him wanting to learn, and using this forum as his mechanism for that, is commendable. Thanks, JAR.
However, it helps nobody when somebody says, "I don't know anything about math...2+2=5, right?," only to have the equivelent of a math teacher laugh and sneer at them, in the equivelent of a classroom no less. If you really *must* be a jerk about it, at least do it by answering the question and *then* trying to make him feel stupid, instead of just leaving the first part out. If he says something stupid or ignorant, tell him it's stupid/ignorant, and then explain why. Pretty please?

Thanks for the appreciation Baggle.
When I said "Why do Southerners want to secede from the U.S.", I meant "Why does the portion of the Southern population that wants to secede from the U.S. want to secede?"

Secession is just a romantic ideal for most people. I'm sure a few people are serious about it. One of my favorite bumper stickers ever is a Texas flag with the word SECEDE written in the white part. Who knows, if secession was a part of the constituion that had rules for when a state could secede. There wouldn't have had to have been a war and the federal government wouldn't have become so strong. If large portions of a country could leave if the central government was becoming too powerful and using that power in a bad way. For example, sending DEA goons to arrest a medical marijuanna co op that cared for termnally ill people that were following state laws but breaking unconstituional federal laws.
The confederate battle flag at one point was a flag of rebellion. So anyone that considered themselves a rebel used that flag, not just political rebels, but bikers, artists and musicians too. I think Billy Idol used it for his "Rebel Yell" video, and I know he didn't care about secession.

I guess the "Dukes of Hazzard" was secessionist show because their car had a rebel flag on it. ;)
