I want to be able to see the metadata on some JPEGS. Idealy without paying anything.

What metadata specifically? EXIF data can be read in quite a variety of viewers (possibly Irfanview? Haven't tried) but I don't know what other information jpgs routinely hold.

Rat.

I want to be able to view the comments that things like gimp add to images.

A quick Google search ("jpg comments") led me to http://www.sb-software.com/jpegcommenter/
Seems to be free and safe.

If you are using the Konqueror file browser in KDE you just right click the file icon select properties and then the meta info tab.
Doesn't explorer do this? Seems like a basic feature to me.

Assuming you mean Explorer as in the Windows shell, no it doesn't. Basic feature as in simple to accomplish, yes; basic as in a requirement for most users, certainly not. I suspect there are shell extensions that achieve this, as there are for many other purposes.

If you use notepad to open up a picture, usually the first line will tell you what camera took it, and at what day and time. You just have to wade through all the goofy symbols to find the relevant info. Not sure if this is what you're looking for or not. This only applies to pics taken w/ a digital camera, of course.

Yes it does. Right-click a JPG on your file system, select properties. Click the Summary tab, click the Advanced button. Whole list of EXIF data will show up, not sure if GIMP comments will but I see Camera Model, Len Aperture, Flash Mode, F-Number, etc....

Sure enough it works as promised. I couldn't find it on my own although I came pretty close. It seems to stay in advanced summary mode as well.
Is there an easy way to see a histogram? :D (Just kidding, really.)

Windows pretty much has every feature anyone could need. If only you could find it.

That works. The problem is that is the gimp and photoshop comments I want to see.

Do you want to try reading that back to yourself? It appears not to be a sentence. Anyway, did you try the software I linked about 6 or 7 replies back? Seemed to work for me, though solely on jpgs as far as I can tell.
Cheers,
Rat.
