Hi,
Down at my local gym things have gone a little woo! I picked up a leaflet touting food intolerance testing. All very good I thought until I read the web site: http://www.food4thought-uk.co.uk/1160/frames.php
If you read the page about how the testing is done you'll see what I mean. Obviously this is rubbish and I was wondering how I should approach the gym and ask them to stop touting this crap. They also do a line in Hopi Ear Candling!
I have emailed the food intolerance testing chaps and offered them the JREF $1million challenge, please do the same the address is : Enquiries@Food4thought-uk.co.uk.

Skin Problems / Acne
Headaches, tired, Generally feeling down?
Weight problems?
I reckon you'd be hard put to dissuade the gym against this, good luck though. The symptoms scream to the 'worried well' in their vagueness which would seem to appeal to a certain section of gym goers.
I'm sure one of the medically trained people here will be able to assist but I believe Intoleranance to a food stuff will give most people a bigger reaction than "putting on weight and getting a headache", lactose intolerance springs to mind.
Have you been to your Doctor and come away without the answer you wanted, - rant against current medical practices
Weight problems are an extremely common symptom of a food intolerance. If you are eating foods which your body cant break down then the body stores the food as fat, resulting in constipation, bad breath, feeling sluggish, skin problems, breathing difficulties etc, - "It's not your fault you're fat!", Bah. If your body can't break down a food it gets shunted out the normal way, it's the stuff your body can break down that put's the pounds on.
The time of sensitivity to an offending food is variable, usually, the longer the food is avoided, then it becomes more likely that it will be tolerated. - Ask anyone with a proper food allergy\intolerance, it's a very binary thing "If I'm allergic to Gluten I can't eat normal bread, if I do I get very ill very quickly"
Oh, and the "Components of Food Allergy" (Here (http://www.food4thought-uk.co.uk/1160/frames.php))n paragraph is a hoot, whilst it does mention natural stuff in the first line it's just your fairly typical "Chemicals are bad" rant.
As for the testing method it uses the same 'technology' as the Scientologists E-meters (that I've forgotten the name of :() and acupuncture points combined with tubes of dried substance in a metal cup that presumably is waved somewhere near the machine....

I'll bet the testers are pretty evasive if you approach them as a skeptic.

dogbite.I say, if the gym doesn't stop promoting this crap, you start surreptitiously littering the gym with your own leaflets.

It defies understanding how anyone can go to the trouble of producing a key graphic, of significant importance to the website, executed in a reasonably competent graphical way (its even anti-aliased) and yet spell two of the four words incorrectly!

Gee-zus!
The machine we use to test for food intolerances is a Mora RM10s. The RM10s measures the bodies energetic response. By holding a metal rod in one hand and on the other hand gently touching above the nail bed on an acupuncture point with a stylus, the machine will then measure your response.
Firstly we will gently stress the point which is on the outside of the thumb, a slight tingling will be felt by the client, this is so we achieve a better reading on our machine. We then begin to test above the nail bed where the acupuncture point is located.

It appears the photo of the "Mora RM10s" that they have is upside down!
See another one here (http://www.emreview.org.uk/equipment/mora_rm10/mora_rm10_report.htm), right side up.
According to that site the RM10 is for:
Determining energetic state of organs and body systems through Meridian acupuncture points. Assess appropriate remedies -homoeopathic, herbal etc (in test ampoule form) to rebalance the organs.

So the whole business seems to revolve around this Mora RM10s. Here's a much slicker site (http://www.bio-detox.org.uk/52030/53481.html) offering the same service.
The patient holds an electrode whilst the practitioner electronically measures the sensitivity to certain products (whether it be food, E numbers, or pollens) by touching the tip of the finger (or toe) with a measuring tip. Ampoules of the substance are placed in a "Honeycomb" one at a time to indicate the level of intolerance.
The level of stupidity behind this scheme makes me want to scream.

Why do paranormals love the galvanometer so much? I think they're about the only people who have use for them anymore. The device in question can be found discussed on Quackwatch.org
