The Howard Johnson patent Randi refers to appears to be No. 4,151,431. The patent was filed in 1973 and issued in 1979. You may read this patent (at no charge) on the United States Patent and Trademark Office web site, http://www.uspto.gov. (http://www.uspto.gov/)

They couldn't do a remake of the movie. In fact, that movie could not be made in today's world. Not very PC. Nevermind that the black guy was the hero of the movie and that racism was displayed by idiots (although mostly nice, well-meaning idiots).
On the other hand, I was flipping through the channels one Saturday afternoon four or five years ago, and came across Blazing Saddles, so I stopped there. It was at the end, and when it was over, it cut to a mature black couple sitting in a living room talking about the movie. This was apparently a time slot dedicated to a black audience, where they would show a movie and discuss it. The couple had nothing but unqualified praise for the movie, which gave me a somewhat better feeling about the state of the world, that even though it is so un-PC, they were open minded enough to see past that.
My favorite gag was the one that included "You said 'rape' twice." Try to imagine them putting that into a movie now.
