Interesting point, however why not just set yourself up as friendly and non competitive, same results , no?

If everyone did that, then super. It's rare, and the stakes are too high to chance it with important matters. People do set themselves up as friendly, then they stab you in the back.

I'm not talking about friends and family, I mean all the big things that are mostly beyond our control (those things I listed earlier, along with sex and money, and most things wicked!).
