With the rate of aids, war, land being consumed by desert, and deaths caused by religion gone amuck; I am starting to wonder if sub-saharan africans will be near extinct by the end of this century. Sad but possible?

Well the birthrate is so high that it might overcome all these problems...

Those poor lions. We need to start a fund to give them a home. [BURP]

This type of data just goes to show how easy it can be to train a human.
The process goes something like this:
1) Animals kill humans,
2) The human response is to kill other humans (which such and absorbing effort, that that the human killers tend to forget all about the animal killers),
3) Since the animals did not get a negative response in regards to the killing of the humans, the animals continue to prey on, and kill, more humans.
4) Repeat of Step 2), then Step 3), then Step 2), then Step 3), then ...
Ugh!

I've been wondering the same thing lately, corplinx. I was just discussing this last night at dinner with my girlfriend, actually.
African leaders will not accept US food aid, do not want an "outside solution" to their "African problem" of AIDS, and are locked in civil war and genocide constantly.
So between the starving, the disease and the genocide, how can they survive? Even with a high birth rate, won't children eventually far outnumber adults? Besides, many children are born with AIDS anyhow, so how long will they live, even with a high birth rate?
The ******* side of me secretly(well, not anymore I guess) wonders if eventually natural selection will do away with AIDS in Africa the same way sickle cell somewhat did away with malaria, and that maybe it would be a good thing for the rest of the world, as Africa may be a lost cause anyhow. Cold hearted, yes. Hard to see it any other way, though.

I don't think Darwinism can wipe out the problem of AIDS--at least without leaving everyone much worse off than before. In African countries it disproportionally spreads among healthy adults and, in particular, teachers. So even if the disease completely wipes out a portion of the population & then goes away, it will have dragged down the quality of life for everyone in the process. It's like Darwinism in reverse. People in those nations will end up poorer and less educated--which will probably encourage a high birth rate in the long run.
AIDS makes a lot of problems, but I doubt it solves any. Not even overpopulation.

African leaders will not accept US food aid,
One African leader (Levy Mwanawasa of Zambia) refused GM food aid (from the US, agreed), because of fears that Zambia would lose trade with the EU. The pressure for this came from Europe, not Africa. As to AIDS, OK, Mbeki (South Africa) is nuts on this, but the rest aren't. Uganda has done a particulary good job of educating its people in this regard.
Africa is in the sh*t, but it can improve. All it needs is an even break on trade, removal of the threat of sanctions for using pesticides and GM crops, and lots of education. Oh, and time, a couple of generations is my guess.
