Britain has a very large problem: Bomb plot suspect sold poisoned burgers.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2102317,00.html

AN ISLAMIST terrorist sold poisoned burgers from a street-corner van and planned to contaminate beer at a football stadium, the Old Bailey was told yesterday.

The alleged extremist, one of seven on trial for plotting to blow up British targets, was also said to have suggested poisoning takeaway food and sabotaging BT.

The claim was made by an American supergrass [a police informer] said to have links to al-Qaeda, testifying against his alleged former accomplices. He said another defendant attended a talk given by Abu Hamza al-Masri, the jailed cleric, where “video wills” made by the September 11 attackers were praised.

In his second day of evidence, Mohammed Babar described his first meetings in Pakistan with three of the men, accused of conspiring to cause an explosion in Britain.

He said his initial contact with Waheed Mahmood, 34, from Crawley, was via the internet. Babar’s e-mail address was pleasureofallah. yahoo.com.

Babar, the key prosecution witness, then met Mr Mahmood at the latter’s house in Pakistan, with other British men including Salahuddin Amin, 31, of Luton, and Anthony Garcia, 24, of Ilford, East London, who are also on trial.

Fired up for jihad (holy war), the men were said to be keen to fight in Afghanistan but were told by Mr Mahmood that this was not possible — the country was closed to foreigners.

Mr Mahmood, who worked for Transco National Grid, then allegedly gave examples of possible British targets to his accomplices. Some were intended to cause maximum financial damage by hitting utilities or telecommunication plants.

The court was told that other suggestions included taking a job as a beer-seller at a football stadium, smuggling in poison in a syringe. Babar said Mr Mahmood claimed that he had already sold toxic burgers from a mobile van. Another plan was to distribute leaflets for a fictional take-away restaurant, then deliver poisoned food to houses.

Is there any record of anyone getting sick or dieing from poisoned food?

Babar’s e-mail address was pleasureofallah@yahoo.com (pleasureofallah@yahoo.com) Is this a joke?

Look- if this guy was the worst thing about British food, the world would be a better place.

Most of the (British) Pakistanis I know are far more concerned with selling you a decent curry at a reasonable price than with poisoning anybody- though having seen the abuse they sometimes take from late night drunks with the munchies, I wouldn't blame them for slipping some phenolpthalein in the hot sauce.

Pakistan has done more for British Cooking than could ever be undone by some twit selling bad burgers. McDonalds have probably killed far more people by selling "Good" burgers.

To be accurate, these people finally settled on blowing us up.

But before that, they considered: opening a fast-food joint that sold poison; selling poisoned beer; and selling poisoned burgers. At soccer matches.

They didn't just want to kill us, they were indulging in crude national stereotypes.

Eeeehhhh!

To quote Dorothy Parker when she heard Calvin Coolidge has died (Here's one of his longer speeched: "I do not wish to run for persident in 1928"): "How can they tell?".

Apparently, their original attempt to spread pestilence in the land of Allah's enemies had failed when, to their perplexed chargin, pi**ing in the infidels' beer had absolutely no effect on its color, taste, or popularity.

An Israeli took his seat on an airplane and kicked off his shoes, preparing himself for the long flight. To the seats on either side of him came two Arabs, who didn't bother to conceal their animosity upon seeing him. Determined to do his part for intercultural relations, the Israeli offered to get his right-side neighbor a Coke. The Arab paused for a second, then agreed. While he was up, the Arab spat in his shoe. Upon returning and watching the recipient begin to enjoy his drink, he repeated his offer to the other neighbor, who accepted, and repeated the first one's act. Returning to his seat and discovering the foul play, th Israeli remarked, "How long must this continue between our peoples? This animosity, this bitterness, this spitting in shoes and peeing in Cokes?"

What amazes me about this is that the prosecution are using a supergrass. Given the history of these types at previous trials it's like handing the criminals a "get out of jail free on appeal" card.

Was the burger van based in Rothesay around 1990? I think I had a burger from them that my brother's cat refused to touch.

Not that I am aware of.

(Or rather yes but probably not related to this. Lots of people become ill after eating food from street vendors. It's a pretty regular standard local news report over here e.g. "hot dogs stored next to deadly rat poison" or "hot dogs half eaten by rat is sold to a tourist for £23.45" or "street vendors don't follow basic hygiene".)

I have to say from the news reports we have been getting about this bloke's testimony I have become slightly suspicious about him being a reliable source of evidence. It would appear that he knows everyone who has been involved in any type of terrorist plot in the last few years and their mums - I wouldn't be surprised if doesn't start grassing on Guy Fawkes!

Naturally - he's a supergrass. As Camillus says, they're not exactly known for the quality of their evidence. If anyone gets convicted we'll be having more Quash than a toddler's party.

Actually, this raises an interesting point. I suppose it's possible that he's telling the truth, or that he is delusional and just wants to be a super-terrorist with his Burgers of Doom. But is it possible that he's trying to sow some seeds for messing up the trial?

Ah Vestas such a culinary er delight from my youth.

Just read the latest report: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4853312.stm

And it just made me thankful that modern education is so bad that people don't know the UK is a group of islands surrounded by a lot of sea and no part of the UK is what more then 100 miles from the coast.

Asked what happened when the man, who did not know what was in the packet, went through security at Lahore airport, Babar told the court: "First he got pulled over. He was a collector of knives. "He had a lot of knives on him. They pulled him over to see what was in his luggage. They saw that he just collected the knives so they let him through."

So knife and I suppose that means gun, hand granade (don't pull on that metal ring pleeze) and bomb collectors and collectors of heroin and cocaine can travel with their precious collections if they are embarking from Pakistan without any problem.
