So a slight readjustment. The 2006 and 2003 lambs are about equidistant from their solar eclipses.

Okay, you want an interpretation. Let's go by the theroy that Nostradamus was commenting on current events and used obscure language so as not to offend anyone.
When the eclipse of the Sun will then be,
The monster will be seen in full day:
Quite otherwise will one interpret it,
High price unguarded: none will have foreseen it.
On 14th January 1553 there was a total solar eclipse. As an astrologer Nostradamus would've known this.
In January 1553 in Britain increased its discrimination against the Catholics. This was an open policy. This is the monster seen in full day.
The "one" was Queen Mary who came to power in June. She changed the law (ie, interpreted it otherwise) completely.
A high price for those unguarded and who hadn't foreseen it, as many clergymen flee or were arrested.
This was published in 1555, of course. A neat little commentary on current affairs.

monster
c.1300, "malformed animal, creature afflicted with a birth defect," from O.Fr. monstre, from L. monstrum "monster, monstrosity, OMEN, portent, sign," from root of monere "warn" (see monitor). Abnormal or prodigious animals were regarded as signs or omens of impending evil. Extended c.1385 to imaginary animals composed of parts of creatures (centaur, griffin, etc.). Meaning "animal of vast size" is from 1530; sense of "person of inhuman cruelty or wickedness" is from 1556. In O.E., the monster Grendel was an aglæca, a word related to aglæc "calamity, terror, distress, oppression."

Always worth reading again.

I thought it was funny that Doc started this thread in February, the six-legged lamb was born in March, and he post-dicted the lamb in April. I did a quick post search to make sure my impression was correct, so hopefully I didn't miss any references to it in these 30 pages. If he'd... you know... thought to mention something to us ahead of time, his stock would have gone up quite a bit. He must not have had the time to bring it up since he had all that important Depeche Mode information to tell us about.

I knew ages ago his behaviour would cause him to be banned. I in fact reported two of his posts (but not the one that got him banned). They mostly are. Easy to predict.
My only opinion is that they should be asked to put up or shut up. If they repeatedly refuse they should be ignored.

For the 'ignore' tactics to work, the troll would have to be isolated completely and permanently; i.e. no one ever must reply to this troll's posts. This hardly works on an almost rule free forum (Thanks to JREF).
Ergo, other posters form an opposition. Perhaps by conferencing per PM. (Wink.) Define your tactics, form a plan and then simply execute it.
A troll usually is outnumbered and outgunned when smart people pay attention and strictly play by the rules. Ideally, the opposition consists of at least five posters with lots of time on their hands. Work in shifts. Get creative. It works in most cases because most trolls simply try to vent frustration. This wears off easily when countered. Just do it.
Of course, I do not yet have a satisfying explanation how this troll encountering benefits the "Mission of the JREF". It has a far-fetched "E" in it, though.

I want to add:
First of all, as rjh01 said, every poster should have a couple of attempts at stating his point. No participant on the JREF Forum should be considered as a troll per se.
Creationists, homeopaths, naughtyrasputins, dowsers, telepaths, t'ai chis, alien abductees, mind readers, color sign theorists. Let them explain what they have got. Give them reasonable time and opportunity.
Experience shows those advocates sooner or later will reveal easy targets for logic and reason. Applied in a way like this bearded dude said: "We must handle them firmly but gently." What's his name again...?
In every sensible public discussion, assembly, meeting, etc.: If you do not contribute productively to the common goal, you will be asked to leave.
If you refuse to leave, you will get escorted out of the room.
If you resist, you will find yourself outside sooner than you can say bleep.
I do not find this process particularly amusing nor satisfying, but I consider it necessary. Someone has to do the doity woik.

The problem with that theory is the people who seem to derive great enjoyment from baiting trolls... They will never go away if they're being fed.
Unfortunately if they're being serious about their claims all ignoring them will do is give them ammunition on boards which mirror their beliefs, "My point was so stunning they couldn't rebut it!". At least in threads like this (BTW - well done guys :)) serious rebuttals and points of evidence were asked for many times before it devolved into a quivering heap, logic and thought were used and the opposition didn't get dragged down into a 'stupid' fight.

This was the first troll I'd engaged in since Lucianarchy, and I think it's been a learning experience. Abuse is a lot of fun, but if you don't actually have a solid argument to put forward between the insults, you're not going to get far. I was a little worried about using trollish techniques against a troll. While posting the same thing for the nth time, I actually wondered if I'd be told by a moderator to stop spamming the board.
Nevertheless, I'll admit to being quite proud of what we acheived. Now I know how the Mythbusters feel.

:D Well spotted, and welcome to the board.

Why do people like drambus come here? Do they infect most forums? Or is it something that attracts them, like winning $1m? Is there anything we can do to stop them or discourage them?
I knew ages ago his behaviour would cause him to be banned. I in fact reported two of his posts (but not the one that got him banned). They mostly are. Easy to predict.
My only opinion is that they should be asked to put up or shut up. If they repeatedly refuse they should be ignored.
I find that the high concentration of this type of person is fairly unique to this forum. I assume it has to do with the challenge, and the fact that nearly every type of paranormal belief system is skewered here. I also post on the snopes urban legend forum, where you might expect there to be a lot of similarly deluded people, but it honestly doesn't happen much there. Perhaps the specific legends debunked don't raise as many hackles as debunking schools of thought.
I don't think there is anything that can be done about it. I think dealing with lunatics is inherent to JREFs mission. Individual posters can of course take themselves out of the discussion at any time. But I think prematurely banning people (even if you know they're going to eventually implode like this) is a bad idea, because it just gives them more ammunition to say the contest is rigged. Better to hear them out and just continue being rational until they either start making sense or implode.

Therein lies the problem... However much you ignore the troll and want them to go away there's always someone willing to continue the pointless discussion, and you'll always get drawn back to it, like an horrific car accident or a particularly ugly new insect...

Hey! My first post; I haven't been on any forum in ages, so, please forgive me if I'm a little rusty.
I know I'm probably flogging a dead lamb here, but it's already May 2nd, and I have yet to see any evidence of anything earth-shattering, miraculous, or apocalyptic going on around me... well, there is this nasty blood-blister on my left palm I developed while removing an old stump from our yard. And I guess it sort of resembles a silhouette of the head of Donny Most aka Ralph Malf of TV's "Happy Days"... and... hey, wait a minute... Donny Most... D.M.!
What if Dr. Mad-ass was right?!

For me, engaging drmabus in the way I did was the equivalent of a [insert decadent practice]: You always wanted to try it, you kinda knew it would probably suck, you felt uneasy afterward and never will do it again.

We've had Mabus trouble on About.com/Agnosticism-Atheism forum, as well. He's been gagged repeatedly, only to come back with the same old inanity under yet another sock puppet account. He is the most persist troll I've ever seen.
I suggest doing what the moderators on About.com do: gag every Mabus account as soon as it is detected, don't even bother trying to talk with it. This is just some disturbed person who gets kicks out of trolling. He makes no effort at legitimate discourse.

Wow, it took me two days to read through all that. Even after I started skipping the repeats. It was a masterly performance, I must say.
But somehow, deep inside of me I wonder if somewhere someone is preparing to claim that they have beat the Turing test? (Not really, but still... if not for the banning then would this would still be going on?)
If I were to attempt to write an Eliza and wanted it to avoid the usual bot-falls, then surely a Nostradamus-nut is exactly the kind of persona that would have people overlook a lot of discrepancies and non sequiturs?
Sadly, I don't think this is the case here. If I was a little bit hotter on the ol' programming, maybe it would be fun to write a bot that would respond to these nut-jobs.
"The MILLION is mine! You will be AMAZED!"
"Tell me about this amazing thing."
"It will blow your mind"
"I am sure it will blow my mind. How?"
etc...
and they would be happy. Until the bot learned to ask for evidence.

Critical thinkers? More like One-Dimensional thinkers, unable to distinguish between appearance and essence, completely subjugated by the power of existing society, deriving their views of the world and their mode of behaviour from existing practices and modes of thought. You try to debunk any ideas that threaten your closed universe of thought, an empty universe without aim and design......
