a major sticking point seems to be the the "cambrian explosion"
Am I wrong in thinking that this ISNT a major problem for evolutionists and that it wasnt a blink of an eye but millions and millions of years?

Nope! Your time-scales are reasonable. But it would seem your protagonists' grasps of geology, philosophy and science are minimal to none, so don't fret it.
Seems you are up against at least one YEC - Young Earth Creationist. They are obdurate at the best of times, just plain dense as osmium the rest. The best question you can ask is "What evidence will you accept that would change your mind on this?" Answer will probably be "Nothing! I believe!", etc. Until they get past that obstacle, there's not much chance of a "conversion"...

When will we have the Great Debate between those who believe that rain comes from clouds and those who believe that God creates rain?;)

Yes, it covers a period of millions of years, so is only "sudden" on a geological scale. Also, note the following:
1. The main reason why the Cambrian layers show a dramatic increase in fossils is because the pre-Cambrian lifeforms did not easily fossilise, due to being predominantly soft-bodied (although there are some fossils of even these, just much rarer).
2. There are no mammals or reptiles in the Cambrian rocks, which shows that not all lifeforms came about at the same time (as Creationists like to think).

but the real questions are, was the "Cambrian explosion" a controlled demolition? Did it use thermite? And was a second "Cambrian explosion" responsible for bringing down WTC7? ;)

The Ediacara biota (http://www.peripatus.gen.nz/paleontology/Ediacara.html) are pre-Cambrian.
The "Cambrian explosion" was an increase in diversity after an extinction event.

Just finished reading “in the blink of an eye”.
Proposes that the Cambrian explosion is caused by the evolution of the eye as an organ of sight, not just light detection. With the eye there is nowhere to hide, you can actively hunt, and life seriously gets a whole lot more competitive!

Before Cambrian - Wide variety of soft bodied organisms (little fossilization potential)
After Cambrian - Wide variety of soft bodied organisms (little fossilization potential) [Google Burgess Shale] and hard bodied organism (high fossilization potential)
Result - You see a lot of fossils (mainly brachiopods and trilobites, etc) after the Cambrian so an apparent proliferation of fossils (coined as an explosion). Some of the soft-bodied organisms began to precipitate calcite shells, that's all. Not sure about the "eye" development theory.
