View Full Version : Is the forum slowing down again?

I notice lately the forum seems very slow. Usually I log on and everything is fine, but after about twenty minutes I will click on a thread link and nothing happens. Maybe a minute goes by. Once in the thread, again everything seems ok unless I try to post, when again nothing happens sometimes for three minutes, at which point I give up and log off. If I log on again, most times everything is ok, then it starts again.

My DSL link was upgraded recently to 4.5Mips, though various tests give download rates of 1.8-2.8Mips.

Anyone else seeing this or do I have a browser problem? (Firefox 1.5.02)

I've also had some slow responses. I haven't had to log out and on but it has been slow at times.

It's fine when its working, I get an error once in awhile, I can't remeber if its a DNS or server didn't respond but probably something like that. I usualy just give up and go somewhere else, by the time I come back the error doesn't come up anymore.

I seemed to be having a lot of problems with the forum using Firefox. I'd be fine for ~15 minutes (sometimes, not that long), then suddenly I'd be trying to post a reply and FF would simply lose the site altogether. If I shut down FF then fired up IE, sometimes it would be fine, others not. Since I've gone back to using IE exclusively, I've had few problems. Does seem a wee bit slow at times, but it doesn't lose sight of the site, as it were.

I've been having the same problems as Soapy, especially today. I am also using Firefox. I switched back and forth between IE and FF, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Things seem faster this evening.

Me too. The longer I'm on the forum, the slower my browser gets until it's barely usable. Then when I shut down Explorer, my computer freezes for a minute or so. The problem is never there if I don't visit the JREF forum. Probably a memory leak, unbalanced stack, or other part of forum code that's not cleaning itself up.

There have been some technical issues today. So if you've seen slow page loads, or database errors, that might be why. As to the performance of your browser declining as you use the forum, I've not experienced that. Since the forum is all HTML and JavaScript to the browser, I'd be surprised if it caused any problems.

My ISP contacted me awhile ago with an offer to upgrade my DSL to 5 megs so I went for it. After a few days of my connection dropping repeatedly, I contacted them and told them I wanted my OLD service back. It seems the combination of distance and older wiring caused the signal to drop every few minutes. Since switching back to the older settings/configurations (3 megs) I've experienced no further problems.

Ray- I've been wondering along those lines. My problems are virtually always on this forum though. While I do leave it live far, far more than anything else, it does seem to have characteristic problems all it's own.
