Here's an interesting story about an encounter with woo my mom had at work.

A co-worker of my Mom's, let's call her J, informed her that Saturn was going to be able to be seen quite clearly tonight(5-2-06) near the cresent moon. My mom thanked J for the info since I happen to enjoy stargazing. My mom asked J if she, too was interested in astronomy. "No," J replied,"astrology."

MY mom was understandably suprised by this because J had previously worked as a chemist and was not what my mom would consider a "woo". So my mom, being the good skeptic that she is, politely brought up the point that she and I use when confronted by this particular kind of woo: what if an important star in an important constellation has recently destroyed itself and we here on earth do not know about it because the light from the star's destruction has not yet reached us? How would that effect one's future?

J was only able to reply, "Good point."

I have never been more proud of my mom. :D

Didn't you learn in physics that the long-undiscovered astrolo-particle (the woo-on) travels at the speed of light? So, if you don't see any photons from a star, there aren't any woo-ons to affect your future.
