According to P&T's bad Bullsh-t episode they've been arguing about this for 5 years and apparently haven't decided.
I personally think they should just rebuild the Twin Towers. With a 9/11 museum of sorts in one of them. But generally, I think it's the best way to say "you can't scare or change us."
OH, and NO CONSPIRACY THEORISTS IN THIS THREAD. Take that crap elsewhere.

I suspect the delays are to give the government extra time to plant the explosive charges to be set off at the exact same time that a plane might happen to crash into it at some point in the future.

I agree, with one condition: That they be one foot taller than before. :D

Sorry Jocko, but I don't think OBL's head is one foot tall. Though maybe we can make a pedestal out of dung to make up the difference.

I like the way you think. It's too much to hope you're an architect with the port authority on speed dial, I suppose?

Seriously, there should also be a monument (not a "memorial") to Rick Rescorla. No matter how big, no matter how grand, it can't be big enough or grand enough. Some day, people should be able to point to his statue and tell their grandchildren, "Nineteen Muslims (you can look up in your history book what a Muslim was when we get home, child) killed almost three thousand people here one day a hundred years ago. That man saved the lives of almost three thousand other people on that same day, all by himself."

I didn't see the Bullsh!t episode, so I don't know what they got right or wrong or what's dated. But the disputes over the buildings are over. PANYNJ is going to build the Freedom Tower (http://www.renewnyc.com/plan_des_dev/wtc_site/new_design_plans/Freedom_Tower/default.asp) and construction just began. There are four smaller towers planned. PANYNJ will build one of them, and Larry Silverstein will do the others. The memorial is also mostly planned, but it may be revised because its cost has risen to $1 billion.

It appears he already has at least one memorial:

That episode made me sick.

Agree. I'm baffled by all of the controversy surrounding what to build. Rebuilding the twin towers seems to my simple mind to be the only option for a myriad of reasons.

I don't think they'll be using that design any more for obvious reasons, and besides they weren't much to look at. The Freedom Tower is much better.

I have to agree. The originals looked like two square trunks of Lego. VERY 1960's, I'm afraid.
I think the Freedom Tower design I have seen (see image) has a bit of class and inspiration to it by daring to be different and new. It says "Not just the same and taller than before, but taller and better than before." Flipping the bird in style.

Here is a design, called "a space between" I found moving:

http://www.lowermanhattan.info/rebuild/new_design_plans/freedom_tower_design/slides/images/Slide1.jpgI sort of agree, Zep, except the design for the tower seems to have been watered down considerably since that rendering was made.
And Mycroft, I emailed the "Space Between" link to all in my address book years ago. It never ceased to be met with acclaim. Elegant, inspiring...and it could've been built by now.

Rebuilding the twin towers seems to my simple mind to be the only option for a myriad of reasons. It would be trick, to say the least, to re-fill the space at the top of those buildings, being as they are a known terrorist obsession. As it is they're saying that the single tower, with a much smaller floorplan that far up, will basically be the tallest precinct house in the world since no one but law enforcement is willing to get forced up there.
If I had a company I'd totally lease the top floors. But maybe that means I'd have a company with no employees.

It's made out of glass. No terrorist could possibly destroy it.

According to the P&T episode, those pits in the foreground are the foundations old towers, which will be dug out to house museums. Also, the design and location of the Freedom Tower have been scrapped, because the tower was apparantly designed to be over a tunnel, which is a security nightmare, and the architect who put together the design failed to account for any structural support.

How about we scrounge up the remnants of the Saddam statue from Iraq and re-erect it at ground zero. The inscription should read:
The leadership of GW Bush falsely implicated this maniacal Iraqi dictator in the terrible event that occurred here and we're approaching the equivalent number of dead American soldiers in Iraq to the civilians who died here and near the pentagon.
