I couldn't make this (http://www.chick.com/newseries.asp?wpc=newseries.asp&wpp=a) up.

In new black versions, This Was Your Life (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0001/0001_01.asp) has become It's Your Life (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1101/1101_01.asp) and Somebody Loves Me (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0006/0006_01.asp) has become Hard Times (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1102/1102_01.asp)

Words fail me.

Chick Publications has specialized in non-English language tracts for missionaries all over the world. They have found a higher level of acceptance when the tract is in their language.Friggin' brilliant. What'll they think of next?

Fred Carter, one of the world’s best illustrators, who did the magnificent art for the Light of the World video, is redoing the art for this series. He is also a black pastor of a church, giving him a special insight into what the unsaved person will respond to.

Here (http://www.chick.com/tractimages5951/1101/1101_06.gif) we have Jarome "Jaromiel" Mitchell, the first black man to break Heaven's long-standing "colour barrier" and become an official Major League angel. This man is a true hero for our times.

The black tracts were especially useful to tell the people of color that they are special enough for Chick Publications to make a special edition of the tract line just for them

Congrats, black people! You're special enough...You did it!!!

Why does there seem to be an appartide where all the white folk are in one, and all the black folk are in another?

They pray to the same God, surely?

Well, there is this one (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/1017/1017_01.asp), which has both black and white folks in it. I don't know if it helps that the sub-theme is that only God and little old ladies prevents black men from being criminals.

Oh, and as Bart Simpson said, "Black God rules!" :D

I have to say, I love the art for "It's Your Life", especially The G-rated sex scene in the first panel and the funeral scene in panel 4.

As for "Somebody Loves Me"... :jaw-dropp I'm speechless. I have no speech. What the hell am I supposed to get out of this Poor Little Matchboy story? I mean... damn! And did Chick draw this new version himself? Because it sucks.

Don't be silly. Here is the story of Gomez (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0013/0013_01.asp) a violent gang leader who turns his life around just by hearing some guy recite the standard Chick fluff! And here is the story of the Mexican 'bandito' Juan (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0019/0019_01.asp) whose bad habits lead to the death of his little son! And finally, we mustn't forget the moving story of this other guy named Juan (http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0053/0053_01.asp) who is misled by communism!

Surely this will prove that Chick is sensitive to Hispanics and their issues!

That's a white man dressed in a white robe with a face-covering hood killing a black man. I could be wrong, but I don't think that's the anthropomorphic representation of the state of non-being.

Slight threadjack, but in thinking about the new Chick tract I linked above, I don't know who it's aimed at. Usually the target audience of the tract is meant to identify with the character who gets saved (hence the blackification of the older tracts). But in this one, the character who finds salvation is a famous movie star who donates his money to the Catholic church. So, this tract is for Mel Gibson?

ChristineR
10th May 2006, 02:27 PM
As little as I think of Mel Gibson, the guy is intelligent, knows his theology pretty well, and for better or for worse has chosen pre-Vatican II Roman Catholicism. The idea that a cleaning lady could convert him to evangelical Protestantism is silly.

I think the main target of the tract would be Catholics and possibly Protestants who don't agree with Chick's "saved from hell and entire lifestyle changed by 15 second prayer" theology. Chick thinks no one has ever heard this stuff before and that as soon as they hear it they will know it's true....

Ah, yes, that reminds me of another masterpiece I picked up one night downtown some years ago, by the Pilgrim Tract Society (http://www.pilgrimtract.org/). It's entitled "Cuff - A Negro Slave" and begins thusly:

Cuff was a negro slave who lived in the South before the Civil War. He was a joyful Christian, and a faithful servant.

Well, times are hard, and his master sells him to an "infidel," who vows to stop Cuff from praying. But Cuff says

O Massa, I loves to pray to Jesus, and when I pray I loves you and Missus all the more, and can work all the harder for you.

Massa doesn't like it, Cuff keeps praying and gets a nasty whipping, but still goes on to work.

Meantime, God was working on the Master. He saw his wickedness and cruelty to that poor soul, whose only fault had been his fidelity, and conviction seized upon him. By night he was in great distress of mind.

He feels so bad that he thinks he's dying. But he doesn't want a doctor, he wants someone to pray for him. So they send for Cuff.

The master, groaning, said, "O Cuff, can you pray for me?"

"Yes, bless de Lord, Massa, I'se been prayin' for you all night,"

Master and Mistress are converted, Cuff is set free, and the master goes out to preach the Gospel. The reader is asked not to resist our loving Saviour any longer. The end.

Sigh. The more things change...

Incidentally, you can read a lot of the Pilgrim Tract Society's oeuvre online (http://www.bygodsgrace.net/tracts.html). However, the heartwarming story of Cuff is conspicuously absent.

Well, this is interesting. For once, Chick isn't completely full of feldercarb. The bit about three goddesses and 360 idols in Mecca fits with Salman Rushdie's reinvention of Muhammed's story in The Satanic Verses (which, coincidentally, I'm rereading right now).

And Islam is blamed on Khadija, the Catholic widow Mohammed married!

Chick loves his Catholics!

I'm not sure that Khadija was Catholic. The sites I turn up on the net don't inspire much trust.

It must have been a strange form of Catholicism. Based, in part, on the Gospels of Thomas and denying the trinity/Godhood of Jesus.

The bit about three goddesses and 360 idols in Mecca fits with Salman Rushdie's reinvention of Muhammed's story in The Satanic Verses (which, coincidentally, I'm rereading right now).

The three daughters of God are denied in the Quran. Try [37:149] amongst others.

The argument is twofold. First, Why would God choose daughters for himself? (IE:rather than sons). And second, "If what you say be true, then show us your scripture." Cause it ain't true if it ain't writ down!

(It's True :))

translation by NJ Dawood

[37:149-157] Ask the unbelievers if it be true that God has daughters, while they themselves have sons. Did We create the angels female? And were they present at the creation? Surely they lie when they declare 'God has begotten children.'

Would he choose daughters rather than sons? What has come over you that you should judge so ill?

Will you not take heed? Have you a positive proof? Show us your scriptures, if what you say be true!

And Mohammed threw out all of the idols.
That said, there is a black rock that Umar ibn al-Khattab kissed -- but only after saying, "No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither harm anyone nor benefit anyone. Had I not seen Allah's Messenger kissing you, I would not have kissed you."

For once, Chick isn't completely full of feldercarb.

For once? FOR ONCE?
He's 99% good I tell you!
'tis written at aforementioned site.
