With a one in three chance a AOL astrologer "picks" Katharine McPhee as the American Idol winner. Yet, the "winner" is qualified by the astrologer with "if she makes it that far." The astrologer's "credentials" to make a 1/3 guess is "a B.A. in The History and Science of Astrology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst."

Does such a degree actually exist? "Science of astrology"?

Though unwittingly oxymoronic, there are several schools offering diplomas and/or degrees in these lofty matters. Here's (http://www.seattleweekly.com/news/0102/tech-frishberg2.php) a report of some examples. One wonders if these institutions take students' and lecturers' natal charts into account when working out curricula, timetables, exam schedules and such...

wow, that is the most ridiculous prediction i have ever heard. essentially, assuming she just made the call with three people left, she has a 50/50 chance if she drew a name out of a hat. throw into that the fact that the girl is attractive and the two guys are pretty hideous and i think most people who arent blessed with her "gift" could make the same call, and thus bumping her odds much better than 50/50. i am sure if she gets it right she wont mention that she made the prediction with only three (or 2 1/2?) contestants left.
i know you all will ask for my evidence for this, but i can't account for my abilities, and to explain them could mean losing them. i had a strong vision that the corpse of stalin would not win american idol, and i had that vision before the season even started

Wow this is creepy, I had a vision that I would not win the American Idol. Unbelievers (kill the heretics!) will quibble that I am not American, and cannot carry a tune in a bucket but they have not opened their minds. I better get my JREF challenge in before Gfunk does.

Hell, I predicted Katharine back in February, when there were something like eleventy gajillion contestants still in the running.
(I sense Claus gearing up to ask for evidence...)
Here's your evidence! (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=52556)

Jeff Jawer managed to get a BA in the "History and Science of Astrology" from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst back in 1970, but to do so he had to create his own program through the school's Interdisciplinary Studies program, one of those do-your-own-thing experiments that colleges were so fond of back in the day. Today, he could get virtually the same degree from an accredited, state-recognized college based in Lynnwood, although he would have to do it over the Internet.

I got word back from UMass: He does have the degree.
But I've asked them what the "science" stands for. No word back yet on that one...

Taylor Hicks was chosen over California ingenue Katharine McPhee as the fifth American Idol on Wednesday night, at the end of a star-studded live finale.

With one in three he still gets it wrong. With this type of "ability" keep this man away from Las Vegas.

Millions of people pick the winner every year. Are they all psychic?

Oh, wait, did I say Mars was in retrograde? I meant Venus was in retrograde, so, um, if I didn't make that mistake then I would have picked the right one.

I predict that for the NEXT season of American Idol:
1) I will continue my streak of never having watched this show.
2) On the off chance I ever do hear the winning contestant sing, I will find it to be most repulsive.
Check back with me in a few months to see just how right I am.
Gabba gabba hey, y'all.
