WASHINGTON -- America's currency remains the "greenback," but the new $20 bill unveiled Tuesday is cash of a different color.
While the face and back of the $20 remain familiar, with the black-and-white image of Andrew Jackson on the front and the green-inked White House on the back, the key difference is a pastel background that fades from a light green to peach and back to green.
The new $20, which ATMs will start spitting out this fall, is the first step in redesigning the nation's paper money to foil counterfeiters.
The $50 and $100 bills will follow in the next two years, and officials with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing are still deciding whether to remake the $5 and $10 bills, which are less frequently forged. There is no plan to redesign the $1 or $2 bills.
