NPR had a segment this morning on the construction boom in China; the reporter talking about how very ancient residential housing areas are being razed for new office and commercial areas, and the residents moved to newly-built apartment complexes on the outskirts of major cities.
One old man who was interviewed said (through a translator) that he could not live in an apartment, as he is used to being able to "draw energy from the Earth" in his traditional house-with courtyard.
I remember Arthur Clarke talking about dedicating a brand-new technology teaching center in his adopted Sri Lanka. They had to have a local geomancer come to the site and proclaim that the "energies" were proper for the building.
