View Full Version : I don't understand the logic here

6/6/06 could be a devil of a day — or not (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-06-05-sixes-devil_x.htm)"There's nothing to get upset about," said Baptist preacher Tim LaHaye, author of the Left Behind series based on the prophesies of Revelation. The final book in the series, The Rapture, is being released, naturally, on June 6. "Everyone knows that the rapture event will not take place on 06/06/06 because Jesus prophesied that no one knows the day or the hour of His return."Everyone knows that the rapture will NOT occur today because Jesus said no one knows that it WILL occur today?

I think he's saying if it happened today, it would far to predictable to be the work of God.
No logic is harder to understand than the kind that does not exist. :D

I think this author is saying that the Rapture could happen at any time.
All the same, I'm not going to pack my bags.
All of this wierdness reminds me of one of my favorite Family Guy scenes: Christopher staggering out of "No Way Out," baffled, saying, "I don't get it...how does Kevin Costner keep making movies?" :D

But maybe God is using reverse psychology here - 06/06/06 is such an obvious date that if the Rapture actually occurred today it would take Tim LaHaye and everyone else by surprise, thus fulfilling the prophecy about no one knowing the day!

This leads to the poison scene in The Princess Bride.
Man in Black: All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right... and who is dead.
Vizzini: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy's? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You've made your decision then?
Vizzini: Not remotely. Because iocane comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.
Man in Black: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
Vizzini: Wait til I get going! Now, where was I?
Man in Black: Australia.
Vizzini: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the powder's origin, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.
Man in Black: You're just stalling now.

Ah, the Princess Bride. "My name is Indigo Montoya. You bleached my father's blue jeans. Prepare to dye!"
BTW, the Rapture has already arrived (http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/Rapture/default.asp), and I think it sounds great. But I always think that about this guy's products.

Here's my attempt at explaining his logic:
The Baptist preacher was right because 666 is given as the number of the beast, not the date of the rapture. The calendar we use is not even in sync with the calendar used when the bible was written so there can't be any correlation between our 6-6-06 and a biblical prophesy. The bible does state that no one knows when the rapture will occur, implies that it is a waste of time to predict it. Since all of the previous attempts to predict the rapture have failed, it seems the bible is correct in this matter.

Or that the whole thing is a load of hooey.

Anyone know the carbon:nitrogen ratio of hooey? I could use some new material for our compost heaps... Erm, or is it toxic?

I am still here! :D
But there are lots of fluffy white clouds floating by...and some curly haired woman is pushing a bagel with Philly on me.

Although it is odorous, it is quite appropriate for composting. Fundamentalist hooey should be allowed to age before application near living plants.

*nod* Makes sense. Any fresh hooey will burn plants -- too nitrogenous, gives off nasty ammonia. If mixed with what I collected at a cattle farm a couple weeks ago, nobody will be able to tell 'em apart.
