View Full Version : the unsavory taste of racism

My mother was in myrtle beach, south carolina last week and it just so happened to be bike week. Bikers from around the country converge, have a good time, and ride their harleys. She found out an ugly not-so-well-known factoid while she was there. The week after is bike week, for blacks. She was there during the white bike week. She saw a tshirt that read "100 percent cotton and your momma picked it" and one that said "this week: bike week; next week: buck wheat" complete with a picture of the aforementioned little rascal.

She talked with a few local shop owners and they said they loved bike week but would close their shops for black bike week. They claimed the black bikers were less civil, there was sex in the streets, more fights, and so on and so forth.

I think this situation is sad. On one hand you have plain disgusting racism on the part of whites and on the other hand (if the shopkeeps were being truthful) you have the disproportionate amount of violent and uncivil behavior found in young black males that associated with inner cities.

Having grown up in west tennessee and north mississippi most of my life, I am unused to this sort of expression of racism.

Yes, racism is bad. We need to punish criminals in order to discourage crime. This will bring racism to an end.

I could put in a comment here about how Australia has no racism while America, has, but I can't, so I won't.

Considering that Corplinx' thread was about racism in America, I think you can, a_unique_person. I don't know anything about racism in Australia. I do know that a while back Australia regretted it's anti-immigration policy because during World War II, Australia was afraid that it didn't have a big enough population to fend off an invasion from Japan. Of course, an anti-immigration policy doesn't necessarily mean that there's racism in a country.

Can't say I am surprised.

Why isn't Bill O'reilly all over this? I wonder if he knows about it?

"local shop owners and they said they loved bike week but would close their shops for black bike week."

This should be easy enough to verify (give them a call) if your mother could remember the shops.

Online newspapers might be a good source to check crime, or maybe even a call to the local police.

I wonder, however, what those shop owners thought about the tee shirts and could their comments possibly reflect a little racism as well ;)

I don't know, just wondering

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) -- The NAACP claims in two lawsuits that Myrtle Beach authorities and a hotel discriminate against blacks during a biker rally held each Memorial Day weekend along the South Carolina coast.

The group said it also was filing a complaint with the state's Human Affairs Commission, alleging more than two dozen restaurants in the Myrtle Beach area closed last year to avoid serving blacks.

Some of the restaurants named, including Denny's and Red Lobster, said they were open.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and 18 people filed the lawsuits Tuesday in federal court in Florence. They allege that bikers participating in the Atlantic Beach Bikefest are treated differently than the predominantly white bikers at the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Myrtle Beach Rally held a week earlier.

That's quite the idealistic comment, unless it was sarcastic, I can never tell around here. But I think racism is one of the most human traits. Racism is part of society wether we like it or not. I don't think we'll ever get rid of it, because the only way is through education and some people don't have access to it or don't even want it.

The reason he said it was because Australians (I hate to use a broad brush) are pretty darn racist, too. About 1 in 5 is all for wiping the aborigines off the face of the earth.

Anyone can be racist, I think the Japanese have a bad reputation, for example.

The same as sexism, the one in power gets the blame because they have the ability to hurt someone else more than vice versa.

They have had such a hard time of it all, I wonder why they are hated so much, like animals.

Now, they are involved in drunkeness and petty crime out of proportion to their numbers, and hence prison as well, but when you consider that the actual dollar amount they have cost people is pretty small compared to the Allan Bonds of the world, I do wonder. Allan Bond can lose billions and steal hundreds of millions and get the same sentence as an Aboriginal who steals a car or clothes.

Thanks for that blurb. At least the NAACP is on the case. Maybe the Florida chapter which is busy protesting having a high school degree which actually means something can stop and help the South Carolina chapter instead.
