I was recently watching the Bullsh*t episode where they explained that the word "Humbug" used to have roughly the same meaning and impact as the modern usage of the word bullsh*t.

This makes me think of Ebenezer Scrooge's "bah Humbug".
So by modern standards he was saying "bah bullsh*t"

More or less, in terms that were unmistakably blunt without stepping over the line to obscene. And the Wizard of Oz admitted to Dorothy that he was a bull artist. "Bunk" is another good old term of opprobium.
