I also like

The Oxford English dictionary, www.oed.com.

$30 to look up a few words is too much for my tastes.

http://www.wordorigins.org is a good site.

http://etymonline.com

These sites seem to have a very, very limited number of words.

Here's a good one.

...snip..

But it is very good - if there are just a few words you want researching drop me a PM and I'll use my subscription to the OED to get the info you require.

I like http://www.takeourword.com/ It is a magazine-type format with articles and commentary. Lighthearted and well researched with some nice discussions.

Thank you. Bu using some books and poking around the internet I found everything I was looking for with one exception: deference. I'll PM you.
