View Full Version : Need insulation advice

Hello.

I'm wondering if anyone could advise me on a cheaper alternative to silica aerogel for insulating my new computer.

I'm building a new computer and I'ver just begun work on the case. the case is actually a "case within a case" there is a tank within the case whcih will contain the motherboard/video cards/pci cards and all the other solid state devices, with external headers for connections.

Through this tank I am planning on flowing a liquid coolant. (obviously non-conductive). The coolant will flow in and out of the tank to a the resevour dewar and a heat-echanger, whcih I built out of a two-stage cryofridge (hooping to keep it stable at -90 C).

Here is the problem, however. To keep the temperature low and prevent unwanted condensation requires insulation. I've already ordered silica aerogel for the actual tank, but it cost me an arm and a leg just or enough to do the most critical parts of the system.

I'm in need of some other high effeciency insulation that won't take up a lot of space. I've looked into vacuum panel insualtion, but unforationaly they don't come in very good sizes or shapes for my needs and obviously they cannot be cut.

As it stands now, I may be going with alternating layers of mylar, polyester/foam compisit, fabric and a fiberglass material...

Any ideas????

(oh yeah...yes I'm serious. I am insane)

Y'know... I was just telling my class about people like you today actually.

They didn't believe me when I explained some of the lengths some overclockers will go to.

Unfortunately your knowledge on this subject apparently far outstrips mine.
Anyway, Good luck

It's a waste of time, IMHO.

It's a waste of time, IMHO.Indeed! By the time that cabinet is finished, you can buy a faster processor in the shops.

Yes, then you buy the faster one and overclock that. I reckon it is a form of OCD...

Drbuzzo it sounds badass to me. I can't help you with your question, but please post your spec at some point. I'd hope you'd be thinking about two of those new geforce 2 in 1 cards, i.e quad sli :D

Maybe these guys can help?

Seems to me, there are two problems associated with insulation.
1. Too little -> noise.
2. Too much -> trapped heat.

Have you considered putting the works , with no case at all, just an open frame, in a soundproofed (or sufficiently distant) room, with a big, slow, fan. (Or indeed putting it in a chest freezer or a weatherproof mesh cage outdoors?)

All we generally need physical access to is the keyboard, mouse and monitor after all.

I know your physical situation might rule this out, but it might not. Separation seems a potentially workable solution to me and I wonder if anyone has tried it?

ETA- I appreciate the whole idea is completely pointless, but it's a hobby, so pointlessness does not apply, right?

This is why the processor is the *last* thing I am going to buy.

Right now I just have the case/hardware/tubing/pumps.

Actually, the only part other than that I have yet aquired is the harddrives, whch I am using in my current computer (6 x 74 gb raptor 10,000rpm sata). Of course, those are just the internals. I already have a big collection of external and network storage
