UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The chairman of an upcoming U.N. conference on the illegal trade of small arms has received more than 100,000 letters of complaint from Americans who say it could impinge on their constitutional right to bear arms, he said Wednesday.
Many of the letters contained a form message available on the National Rifle Association Web site that complains the June 26-July 7 conference will take place on the July 4 Independence Day holiday, U.N. officials said. The message argues that the conference is meant to limit Americans' right to carry weapons.
"And the American people will never let you take away the rights that our 4th of July holiday represents," says the form letter addressed to Prasad Kariyawasam, the conference chairman and U.N. ambassador from Sri Lanka. "Our freedoms are not to blame for the world's problems, and this is a battle you can never win."
I'm always fascinated by conspiracies. I especially like how the resolution to prevent Americans from owning hanguns was scheduled for July 4. I guess evil cabalists have a very strong sense of symbolism.

Wow!
Gun nuts can be so very nutty. BS, it's pure and complete BS. I'm a member of the NRA BTW. I left after Bush the elder left over the "jack booted thugs" crap and came back when Heston took over.
IMO, this is demagoguery pure and simple. It also looks like it is a naked attempt to sell books.
Don't you hate it when the group you belong to becomes that which it is against?
Looks like I might cancel my membership, again. Good think I didn't get the lifetime version.

The NRA can occasionally be rational, but between their lunatic paranoid tendencies and their constant humping the leg of the Republican party, I just have no desire to be a member.

You don't have to be a nut to be nutty.

True enough!
Any person (read, CFLarsen) that would kill someone that they know who has a firearm a commercial airplane sure is quite nutty as well.

The bottom line is, fund raising becomes a lot simpler if you can whip people up into a frothing panic. "The UN is going to have a conference where they will explain why they think handguns should be outlawed" doesn't get nearly as many people to send in checks as "OMG! THE UN IS GOING TO COME TAKE ALL YOUR GUNS!!!!!"
I support the right of people to own guns, I hate the *****' NRA, precisely because they are so prone to using such bullsh*tty methods in the pursuit of their goals.

Go please yourself.
Over two years ago, CFLarsen proudly said:
If I see somebody with a gun on a plane? I'll kill him.

Regardless of just who might have a gun or why (hijacker, killer, police officer, sky marshal, etc.). If he sees anyone on a plane with a gun, then he will kill them, and he has never changed this stance.
If you want to go fly with him, then go right ahead.
I, however, would report him if we ever happened to be on the same plane.
Nor would I ever fly him in my plane.

I was a member in my younger years. I bailed when they went from being a great organization that promoted gun safety and shooting sports to a paranoid bunch of loonies fighting to preserve imagined "rights".

LaPierre has been pushing this nonsense for a while now. Can't deny, it sells with his core supporters. Gun nuts eat this crap up and ask for more. I think he's been whipping up this stuff to sell his new book.
Everytime I think I might send them buck or two, they pull another stunt like this.
