WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Citing a desire to spend time with her family, Christie Whitman, sometimes cast as a lone voice on Bush environmental matters, announced Wednesday she will soon step down as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Environmentalists have long suggested Whitman was unhappy with the White House over several key environmental policies, but she has steadfastly said she was happy in her work.

In a statement, Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope said Whitman was often as odds with the Bush administration on policy matters.

"Under the circumstances, Christie Whitman did the best she could at the EPA, but the Bush administration simply wouldn't allow her to do the job," Pope said.

U.S. officials characterized her departure as routine and noted that Bush has had remarkably low turnover in senior positions.

To spend more time with her family - sounds like a lie to me.

I dunno. It might be the truth. Certainly her horrible record on environment (http://www.tompaine.com/feature.cfm/ID/3972/view/print) fits right in with the Bush agenda. Possible the willingness of the Bush adminisistration to turn over the care of the environment to the pollutors was too much even for her to stomach. Or maybe she got tired of being the head of a department which is completely ignored.

One thing is for sure: You can count on Bush not appointing an environmentalist to replace her. This is possibly because none would work for him.

I hope Bush appoints an environmentalist who favors high-tech solutions to future energy. We should be spending billions on researching alternatives fuels, IMO.

There are two things Republicans don't understand about young people today: They don't give a sh*t about abortion, and they want a clean environment.

Actually, Ralph Nader would be more appropriate. Not only was Ralph the Green Party nominee, but it was his candidacy that handed Bush the election.
