From the BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/5118028.stm):
I am listening to a gospel track on a local radio station. The lyrics are as follows: "This year is ours and in faith we will claim whatever belongs to us Ghanaians."

This song perfectly sums up the mood on the streets of Accra ahead of our showdown with Brazil. The atmosphere is charged and, as ever, our national colours are everywhere.

There is a lot of praying. Last night there were all night prayer services and radio phone-ins are asking people from all religious backgrounds to offer prayers for our team's success.

The score: Brazil 3 - Ghana 0

Not only that but Ghana had some of the worst luck I've seen in the World Cup so far, they should have had one or two goals at least if not for some 'miracle' saves by Brazil.

Chalk this up as another example of the power of prayer - or maybe more Brazilians were praying than Ghanians. :p

That's an easy one... Brazil are obviously in league with Satan.

No, there's a better answer: if they hadn't prayed the score would have been 10-0.

During the game, I noticed several Ghanaians would make the sign of the cross after missing a shot. I'm used to seeing players cross themselves before the game, at the beginning of the game, or after a goal. Struck me as a bit odd.

And a walk down the beaches of Copacabana will show you why. :eye-poppi

Just goes to show Catholicism is the true religion.

Well, that's enough for me then. Where's the nearest nunnery?

What about Guyana...it sounds similar--wasn't that where th Jim Jones Peoples Temple um...you know...did that kool-aid...thing? It's in South America isn't it, like Brazil. Maybe you overlooked a cursory curse thingie.

Brazil could have had about 10 goals. I guess the god they were praying to was on the bog?

My cousin (in his 40's) said this at Easter (which I was forced to participate in as a former (tried to be at least) Catholic.

"The parting of the seas is enough for me." My brother concurred. I wondered if they even knew it was Moses who was supposed to have whipped up that miracle, but I didn't think it was the time for 20 questions--it would only expose my heatheness, and we know how well that goes over on Easter. (His dad killed Him for me, afterall--and to complete the holy trinity trifecta of course.)
