Secular Humanism
Belief in Deity: Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.
Incarnations: Same as above.
Origins of universe/life: The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.
After death: An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.
Why evil? No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology, etc.
Salvation: No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.
Undeserved suffering: No spiritual reasons, but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.
Contemporary Issues: The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and non-violence, and environmental protection.

Well, seeing as the site is highly linked to SELL ME A BOOK, and even switched its self over to AMAZON.COM "for me" in the middle of the test (possibly one of the links one pixel away from a radio button), I would imagine that any belief system that doesn't have a book (i.e. NON-RELIGIOUS) written for it would be of far lower importance than "Secular Humanist - 100%", for which there are books, and which it "inerringly" selected for me.

2. Unitarian Universalism (91%)
3. Liberal Quakers (74%)
4. Non-theist (72%)
**********
I can't agree with the catagories very much, because Non-theist and Secular Humanist are often one and the same. I think because I answered the "what should religion include" questions rather than saying "not applicable", the poll decided that my responses were more secular humanist than non-theist. I consider this a weakness of this type of poll. It makes the assumption that having a moral code somehow makes you religious, a notion which I find chauvinistic.

I was going to disagree with you, but I see now that I did get a higher non-theist score, although I got fed up with the non applicables after a while. I'm curious what kind of scores you got for the lowest ranked though. Seems I'm not cut out to be a Witness at least. :)

About right I suppose. A lot of the questions I found difficult to answer - for instance, for Baptism it offers "Not Required" and "Not Applicable". What's the difference? If I say not required, am I saying you should be able to do it if you want but don't have to? Or that the whole concept of baptism is not necessary to a religion? If I say not applicable what does that mean - that I don't care? That there should be no such thing?
I find most polls like this have questions that make big assumptions about the respondent that don't really fit me.

i would say that the difference that they are going for is that if baptism is "not required" that it is not necessary to be baptized to belong to the religion, where as if it is "not applicable" there is no religion to require a baptism.

Never considered myself a follower of Buddhism, much less Theravada's flavor of Buddhism, whatever the heck that means.
Meh, I had a hard time answering some of the "high/medium/low" priority stuff. Religion is mostly unimportant to me, so I could answer low to all of the questions, but I didn't.
My old political science professor would like that I rated "Liberal" something. He always joked that he hated to give an 'A' to a Republican :)

I was 85% on Quaker!
Here's the definition of an Orthodox Quaker
• Belief in Deity
There is a Trinity of the Father (God), the Son (Christ), and the Holy Spirit that comprises one God Almighty. God is personal and incorporeal.
• Incarnations
Jesus Christ is God's only incarnation. God is manifest within all as the light. Jesus possessed the light to the highest degree and is "the Light" within.
• Origin of Universe and Life
The most orthodox Quakers hold to the authority of the Bible, and the book of Genesis--that God created all in less than seven days and less that 10,000 years ago. But many would maintain that a biblical "day" is not a literal 24 hours.
• After Death
Most orthodox Quakers believe in direct reward and punishment, heaven and hell, the second coming of Christ, and resurrection of the dead (similar to conservative Christian view).
• Why Evil?
Some Orthodox Quakers adhere to similar beliefs as conservative Christians--belief in original sin and Satan. Many believe that lack of awareness of God's divine light within, or rebellion against it, is the cause of wrongdoing, and that alienation from God leaves one vulnerable to temptation or Satan.
• Salvation
Some Friends (the formal name of the group) churches include rites of baptism and communion, but sacraments to God are most often considered to arise from inward experiences, a personal encounter with God, rather than church ritual. Salvation is found internally through union with Christ, the divine Light within all. Many Quaker churches, e.g. evangelical, believe similarly to Conservative Protestant, that salvation is a free gift from God, with faith, independent of good works. Yet moral behavior and good works are viewed as essential to showing faith and obedience to God. Good works, such as humanitarian service, social justice, and peace efforts, are an expression of Christian love. Simplicity and humility are viewed as essential to living a Christian life.
• Undeserved Suffering
The most orthodox Quakers maintain that Satan causes suffering. Suffering is allowed by God as part of His divine will and plan. Quakers focus on reducing human suffering, especially that caused by social injustice or violence.
• Contemporary Issues
Social-betterment programs and nonviolence are fundamental to Quakerism. Some Orthodox Quaker churches are very accepting of homosexuality, and others condemn it as contrary to God's will.

It seems to me the test answers seem to be missing the deist viewpoint, what I like to call "God spinning the top" theory. What would Thomas Jefferson score I wonder.

Wow, thanks for that, Ruby... I didn't get a chance to look it up.
But that test is wrong if the description you gave is accurate. There's no way I could have scored 100% Orthodox Quaker if I disagree with some basic statements in that description. Maybe I need to take that test again! :P

However Ms. Ruby, if the trip got you too reality I have to think it was worth it.
Headed out to Texas probably the end of next week. Lots of hassles getting the closure on this home accomplished for the new buyer. They are the newlywed Captain and either the chief stewardess or other crewmember of a 130" Jongert sailboat, and are in Spain at the moment.
I plan on getting the JREF SW functioning ASAP after getting to Texas. I also hope to get a group large enough for the Amazing Meeting '04 to be able to pool the airfares and charter a plane to take us out and pick us up. Showing up in a Citation or Lear is THE WAY TO TRAVEL!:D
I am already tired of one size fits all tests of my non existing belief system.:p

Seismosaurus,
I chose "not applicable" for questions such as "Is Baptism necessary?" because if I am an athiest then it follows that it is "not applicable". The test assumes that if you choose "not necessary" that you are a theist. My results tend to confirm this, as the first time I tried it I was a "100% non-theist" when I chose "not applicable" to such questions, but when I tried it a second time choosing "not necessary" to such questions I was "88% non theist".

For fun, see if you can hit a certain religion. I answered as islamically as I could remember from my Studies in Islam class 10 years ago - got 100% Orthodox Jew/97% Islam. Not bad.

As an experiment, I retook the test making random selections without reading the options. The first 7 on the list:
Mainline – Conservative Christian Protestant
Mainline – Liberal Christian Protestant
Mormon
Orthodox Quaker
Orthodox Judaism
Eastern Orthodox
Roman Catholic
Interesting how many times “Othodox” appears on the list. Secular Humanist was the very last entry on the list.

Congratulations on your 100% Secular Humanism, Ruby! :) (Its the same as atheist/nontheist, just more optimistic.)
Oh, and congratulations on your 33% Scientology :p!

Sigh, I got the same result as just about everyone else. Booooring.
I guess I should just resign myself to the fact that I'm a Secular Humanist. I'll have to buy one of those "Happy Humanist" bumper stickers.
Why no Zen buddhism in the quiz? They probably couldn't figure out how to score it.

Thanks!
What makes me laugh is the 22% on the mainline to conservative Christian. When I first took this test...a couple of years ago..I was 100% on that!!!! By the time I came on Jref, I had already slipped a bit on the mainline to conservative. I was 100% liberal Christian. I am quite proud of my 100% secular humanism now!! I'd like to email my results to all my friends and family...but they'd freak out!!!! :j2:

I find it interesting that now that I'm considering actually becoming a Unitarian, it slips 8% on my list. hm.
Just because I think it's interesting to do this over from time to time:
1. Secular Humanism (100%)
2. Unitarian Universalism (97%)
3. Liberal Quakers (87%)
4. Theravada Buddhism (83%)
5. Neo-Pagan (80%)
6. Non-theist (76%)
7. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (74%)
8. New Age (69%)
9. Mahayana Buddhism (66%)
10. Orthodox Quaker (66%)
Looks like my Unitarianism is back up. Not quite the 100% I had two times ago, but not bad. Still strong in the Secular Humanism. It's sad to see Judaism drop out of the top ten (even though it's at a higher percentage than last time, 57%).
Always fun. Thanks again, Ruby.

Yep, I enjoy taking this every few months or so. When I first took this test on here....back in May of last year, I was still a Christian. It's neat to look through this thread and see my changing results on the test as my deconversion happened fairly rapidly.

No surprises. I am still 100% secular humanism. I went up two points on Unitarianism...that's nice. I also went up two points on Non theist. Don't know why I went up two points on liberal Christian.

Quakers probably show up high even for people who don't adhere to the listed tenets, because there is an emphasis on keeping credo and doctrine to a supposed minimum, and a history of rebelling against mainstream organized religion.
That has led of lot of Universalists, New Agers, Neo Zenners, etc. to move into Quaker meetings (that and the fact that most Quakers don't bring guns to meeting ;) ...).
As a result the modern distinction between Liberal Quaker and the more orthodox members in the USA has to do with geography and politics as well as how they worship.
Most Liberal meetings are on the coasts in larger groups, while the conservative Friends churches are scatterd thoughout the heartland, more numerous, smaller membership.
There are many links at Quaker.org, some of which will lead you to Quakerly newsgroups which should be enough to scare anyone off.
In other words, George Fox is probably up in Heaven doing this
