View Full Version : Children Can't Recognize Jesus Shock

There was one other part of Kerby's talk worth commenting on. He showed a clip of a study that was done in which small children were shown pictures of various famous people and were asked if they recognized them. Nearly all of the children recognized Ronald McDonald, and Wendy (as in the Wendy's chain of fast-food restaurants), some even knew George Washington.
Then they were shown one more picture. The scene was shot in a way so that we could not see who the picture was of. One child after another shrugged his shoulders. One finally guessed George W. Bush. The experimenter told him that was a good guess, but not correct. (!!)
Have you guessed yet who was in the picture? It was Jesus! Surprise! The audience was stunned. Shocked. Dismayed. There were gasps and groans aplenty. * (http://www.pandasthumb.org/archives/2005/07/report_on_the_2_5.html) Fundie adults still idiots shock.

Pfft. How can anyone claim to know what Jesus looked like? Utter nonsense.
If an authentic picture of Jesus did exist, I'll bet you could show it to tens of thousands of Christians before finding one who would guess "... um, is that Jesus?"
*thinks of the "Neanderchrist" picture on another thread*

"Now Billy, who is this?"
"A young George Carlin? Jim Caviezel? Dolph Lundgren as seen in Johnny Mnemonic? "

Considering that depictions of Jesus are artist impressions, how exactly is a child (or adult) supposed to recognise what someone who may or may not have existed 2000 years ago look like? AFAIK there are no historical pictures or painting of Jesus from the time that he actually lived.

Billy, for SHAME! You know as well as I that nobody's ever claimed to have actually seen Dolph Lundgren in Johnny Mnemonic. We're talking about someone real, not a myth. Think harder...

Adults are stupid.
Yes, how the heck should a child know that Jesus is a Gentile with a long face, blue eyes, light brown hair and a beard.
It isn't in the Bible, is it?

Jesus probably looked more like Osama Bin Laden than Lebowski.

I just don't see Jesus with a beard. I mean, it would have made her look like a freak, and someone would have been sure to mention it in the Gospels. I picture her as looking exactly like Peg Bundy, only with bigger hair.

It wasn't Jesus anyway. It was God. Now I'm even more shocked!

I doubt we could even guess that much -- populations change over the millenia as various groups move in and out. IIRC, the people living in Rome ain't the people who built the Colosseum.

That's nothing. For the majority of children in Australia, "Jesus Christ" is now a swear word.

My dad had an embarressing scene when he was much younger. He went to a fish and chip shop to get dinner for him and some mates, and teh woman behind the counter stopped dead when she saw him.
"Oh, my Lord!!! You look JUST like our dear Lord Jesus!" she yells over the counter. "Really, you do!" she continued. "In fact, you look so much more like him than that bloke in 'Jesus Christ, Superstar'!".
My dad was really tempted to ask her how she knew, but the majority around him seemed to agree with her!
He was really peeved when he didn't get any discount from his meal! :D
