I wasn't sure whether to put this in Science or Religion:

An interesting essay indeed. I can understand why you couldn't figure out where this should go.
So pre-humans and pre-chimps mated. So what? Unless they were closely related to begin with, they wouldn't've produced viable offspring.
I think the fundies would view any hybrid produced, as Mr. Barash promotes, as an abomination unto the lord, and the creators of such would be damned to burn in HELLFIRE.
Seriously, the fact that almost every living creature on earth shares almost identical mitochondrial DNA is, to me, a very strong argument for evolution.

Bah, back then both ancestors would have looked and acted very similarly. Nothing to make anyone squirm about. Even now, both species don't have much for tails, etc.
I'm trying to figure out if we are a product of the hybrid or just the ancestor that found chimp ancestors sexy.

Of course they mated. They were the same animal.
When you stop calling them the same animal is purely an aesthetic question.
As is the whole silly species / variety question. Enough hot air wasted on this to put a balloonfull of biologists on the moon.
