It seems Randi was belittling this practice (looking for potentially offensive wood patterns) but honestly, would you want to be seeing that out of the corner of your eye all the time.
I'd constantly think someone was standing by the door. It'd bug the hell out me.

Did you notice the ghost in the light-colored wood standing behind the short demon? Two for the price of one.
Judiciously applied wood stain should fix the problem.

Let me introduce you to a miracle substance called "paint".......

I see a dog standing on its two hind legs and looking into something like a sliding glass door, complete with ears, tail, and two front paws braced against the glass. Ohh! Scary!
I agree it's stupid to go around looking for and removing "potentially disturbing" patterns on unpainted wood doors.

It's a trick-or-treater in a Batman costume. There is a large ghost standing over him. Still, catching that out of the corner of your eye every day might be a nuisance. I'd go with the paint.

Doors such as this are pre-hung and finished when bought.
1. painting takes manpower and materials=added cost to the builder
2. painted doors are generally considered "cheap", as opposed to inexpensive
3. Painting is a really lousy thing to do to wood.

I appreciate the beauty of a natural wood finish, but speaking as someone who has worked stripping wood, some times you find out why it was painted in the first place.

my first thought on paint was about the house I owned in Denver. Beautiful solid cherry wood cabinet doors- after we stripped 18 coats of paint off 'em!

I'd pay extra for a door like that!
