Sigh.
Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, (Part of Britain, although they're nearer to France) is running short of water. Senator Freddie Cohen has drafted legislation to restrict extraction of groundwater and to meter domestic supplies. Sensible.
Enter Mr Langlois, water diviner, who says there are wide streams of underground water pulled by the moon's gravity from France. So the legislation's on hold while the "States" (The governing body of Jersey) spend over £60,000 drilling bore holes and testing to see if there's any sign of the French water..............

Reported in this week's Private Eye.

Now the results are in and - surprise, surprise - there are no underground streams. The small amount of water extracted was chemically tested and found to be identical with other sources on Jersey - ie it had fallen as rainwater on the island and was not mystically transported there from france, narnia, or anywhere else. Just fancy that.

The news release about the interim report can be found here (http://www.gov.je/PlanningEnvironment/Environment/Deep+Groundwater+Advisory+Group+-+Interim+Report.htm)
The well drillers and water diviners identified two sites on the Island where they had divined underground streams entering Jersey. The sites were on the east coast, at La Rocque and at St Catherine’s with stream depths divined at 45.7m and 76.3m respectively.

When the boreholes were drilled to depths of 55.5 metres and 79.5 metres respectively no major flows were found at these depths.

...

The isotope analyses were all within the normal range for Jersey waters and showed no significant difference between water at the surface and water at depth..

Both boreholes showed some evidence of increased salinity at depth which indicates the presence of sea water infiltration. At St Catherine’s the borehole also had high nitrate levels at all depths. This contrasts with what Langlois said at the public hearing (http://www.statesassembly.gov.je/scrutiny/documents/pubhearings/37077-38462-2412005.htm): What we've done in the last few years, since we've had boring machines and things like that, it's all deep stuff. It's all anything up to 600 feet down and it's free of a lot of the chemicals, a lot of the nitrates and stuff like that. Doesn't get any at all.
