The Sri Lanka (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/data/sriLanka.html)n government has claimed the decision by Finland (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/data/finland.html) and Denmark (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/data/denmark.html) to pull out their nationals from the international truce observing mission is " caving in to terrorism."

The developments came as the ceasefire ran into more problems after Finland and Denmark declared they were pulling out their monitors after the rebels demanded monitors from European Countries withdraw.
Rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) made the call after the EU banned them. Sweden is the only other EU country involved in monitoring the ceasefire.

Before you get your knickers in a knot, you should know the background.
The people from Denmark and Finland are there to ensure that the truce is being kept by both parties.
The Tigers of Tamil withdrew from the peace negotiations last month and stepped up the conflict.
The Tigers have announced that they do not want the Danish and Finnish people from the international truce observing mission present.
The Danish and Finnish are not armed, and can therefore not protect themselves.
Since the premise of the mission being present is that both the Sri Lankan government and the Tigers want them there, there is no reason to stay.

I don't know that you can infer a particular opion behind SteveGrenard's post. Both his post and yours are compatible.
Do you know where the Danes were based? The Norwegians seem to be getting most of the coverage.

Steve's latest campaign is to discredit anything Danish (in the weak hope it will reflect badly on me).

How about Apple Danishes, because they reflect well on Danes.
I don't know where they were based.
OK. I think its a shame they can't stay.

I am prepared to be wrong, but if I recall correctly, the pastries referred to as Danish pastries are called Viennese pastries in Denmark
Go figga

True, and in Vienna it's called Kopenhagener Gebäck, named after Copenhagen, but some claim it actually originates from Turkey. Go figga that :)

The interesting question is why neither country wants to claim the pastries as their own :)

Probably because it's so disgusting. Much too sweet and greasy. And I mean that :)

Simply not true Claus. I recently extolled Denmark for having the Star Flyer ride and I applauded the initial (but not the post-rioting re-publication) of the Danish moohamed cartoons.

60,000 people have died in the Sri Lankan civil war over the last generation.
People hope that they won't have to go through that again.

I'm sure you're right about the number of dead.
The question of Tobias still stands.

The ceasefire is quite weak.
This seems to me to be weakening it further.
CFLarsen's first post seems to cover events and reasons for the withdrawl.
The fact that the Dane's presence no longer has any purpose, despite no permanent peace being achieved, is disappointing.

Not sure I understand. Yes, it is disappointing that war has yet again erupted and that peace-keeping troops therefore must leave. Is that what you find is disappointing?

Yes,
I think the peace keepers have no other option but to pull out at the moment. That is what I find disappointing.
Although I think saying that war has erupted is possibly overstating it. The impression I have recieved is that the number of incidents has increased along with the intensity and there seems to be more risk of further escalations.

Well, as have been explained in other posts our "troops" couldn't really do anything. Unless you want us to bomb them, or send in real armed troops and kill more people, i fail to see what to do. If i don't know what to do, i usually don't really care. And i am not sure i would support sending in armed troops.
ETA: that is not to say i don't care about the people who have died, i care about that, that is a travesty.
