Scott never fails as a camerman.
I was thinking more from the standpoint that I was pretty friendly with Shermer after the cruise. But that too, I guess.
We did play 10 or 12 hours of blackjack together over 3 nights. Of which he made money during each.

Does "not evident" mean not in the calendar?

Sigh. I may not be able to go to TAM next year. I've been out of work for 3 months on disability (with less than my usual pay) due to back surgery. In addition, my company is heavily involved in "off shoring" jobs (including 2 out of my 3 projects) so I may not have a job for very long. The future is too uncertain to put in reservations at this point. I hope I will be able to join you all but I just don't know at this point. :(

Supercorgi, I do hope that your work situation turns out ok and you can make it to TAM. If you do have to book last minute and need a hotel room, I have space in mine. I booked a room with two beds.

Supercorgi, there's always the scholarship for those that need a hand. Go to this thread (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=64541) to see what I'm doing to assist those in need.
BTW, would you PM me where one hour west of Boston you are? I was born and raised around Hampshire County. Just curious.

Hey, I guess now it's safe to add my name to the Role call. :)
Next year I want to meet, in particular, the newbies. Then hang out with the regulars and later regret not hanging out with others for lack of time. ...
I'm in and this will be my first TAM. I want to meet with the newbies as well as the oldies. As a matter of fact I'm looking forward to the whole event. I'm curious though will there be a designated area that Attendees/Members can just hang out be it official or unofficial?

Well, the last couple of years at the Stardust most folks checked in at the Hospitality Suite and there was a particular bar that you could ususally finds folks at, and Dinner at the Peppermill would normally have some JREF'ers, but with us going to the Riveria, there is too much unknown.
We need to organize something for Wednesday night for all us early arrivers, to give us a chance to meet and get the layout of the land, so to speak.

Speaking of registrations...
I registered to the Conference via the on-line system about 7 or 8 days ago, and I haven't got any notification from the JREF, nor my credit card has been charged so far.
Is it just me taking so long in getting a reply, or this is the normal path?
I don't want to bother Linda with this until I'm reasonable sure that it is just my problem.
Thanks!

My understanding is that membership is not confirmed before your registration is processed. As long as you renew before TAM V you should be fine.

slipknot, check this thread and post your time/flight. If somebody else is arriving at that time you can meet up and share the ride.
http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=64937
Otherwise, you have two options; Taxicabs are plentiful ,estimate about $20 for the trip, or shuttle buses, which are only $6-8, but stop at a lot of hotels and may take an hour to get to the Riveria.
Third option is to charm somebody with a vehicel to meet you at the airport and bring you to the hotel....;)

Major derail coming...
You know you're from Wyoming when:
1. Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor on the highway.
2. "Vacation" means going to Cheyenne for the weekend.
3. You measure distance in hours.
4. You know several people who have hit deer more than once.
5. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.
6. You use a down comforter in the summer.
7. Your grandparents drive at 65 mph through 13 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.
8. You see people wearing hunting clothes at social events.
9. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
10. You think of the major food groups as deer meat, fish, and berries.
11. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.
12.There are 7 empty cars running in the parking lot at the Wal-Mart store at any given time.
13. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.
14. You think lingerie is tube socks and flannel pajamas.
15. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and construction.
16. It takes you 3 hours to go to the store for one item even when you're in a rush because you have to stop and talk to everyone in town.
17. You have ever uttered the term " Greenie!"
18.You actually understand these jokes and forward them to all your friends from Wyoming.

Wy: gorgeous place, but I wouldn't want to live there more than a few months a year. I spent a few days in Kemerer, WY digging for fossil fish. (Maybe I was using the wrong bait?) Hi folks,
A role call, eh? Well, count me in.
My name is Lee Graham. I'm a grad student studying evolutionary computing at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. This is my first visit to the JREF forums. I visit randi.org all the time but usually for the swift articles and archives (not that forums aren't great, but I often avoid them because of how addicting and time-consuming they can become).
I'll be attending in January and this will be my first TAM. I'm very excited to be attending such a unique and cool event, but also quite nervous since this isn't merely my first TAM - I'm also presenting during the Sunday session. Any tips or advice for Sunday session presenters or attendees in general?
Cheers and thanks,
-Lee Graham

Hi folks,
Hi Lee, welcome to the boards. :)
but also quite nervous since this isn't merely my first TAM - I'm also presenting during the Sunday session.
Wow, congratulations!
Any tips or advice for Sunday session presenters or attendees in general?
Don't drink too much the night before? :D
The Sunday presentations are around 20-30 min. Last year there were two venues for the presentations, both will have big screens for your powerpoint, and you'll have a microphone for sound (since you can expect an audience of 100-200+). Just relax and present, we don't bite or throw food -- honest!
Hopefully RSLancaster will read this thread and offer some tips, he did a Sunday presentation at the last TAM that went really well.

Cool! I've taken one very short course (continuing ed.) in evolutionary software, and used it to solve a couple problems. For some weird reason, my extremely devout Christian co-worker didn't want to learn about the method.
[quote]Any tips or advice for Sunday session presenters or attendees in general?Have fun! You'll be presenting to friends who don't much about the subject, so you're the expert. Come to TAM fully prepared. There are so many after-hours activites that you won't have time to work on your presentation. Or rather, you won't have the desire to skip anything to work on your presentation.

The Sunday presentations are around 20-30 min.
Sounds about right. I think Dr. Hall said 15min + 5min Q&A or something like that. They'll be determining the specifics of it all in a week or so, I think. 15min isn't much, but it might be just enough to explain my topic if I trim away unnecessary details and include images that help convey some of the ideas.
Last year there were two venues for the presentations, both will have big screens for your powerpoint, and you'll have a microphone for sound (since you can expect an audience of 100-200+).
I was going to ask how many folks stick around for the Sunday sessions, but I guess that answers my question. Sounds like about half the attendees, no? (~200 x 2 venues ~= 400 ~= half)
Just relax and present, we don't bite or throw food -- honest!
Thanks! (What do you throw? Will I need a hard-hat or goggles?:P)

Hmm.. I can't imagine why? :P Perhaps if, instead of using the word "evolution", it was called "population-based-variation-and-crossover-operator-search" the fundies might not even pick up on the connection.
My supervisor had an interesting experience with another computer science professor. When this fellow found out that my supervisor worked with genetic algorithms he remarked along the lines of "that stuff can't possibly work, it's just random". Unbelievable. The reply was priceless: "Oh, I hadn't thought of that".

I guess I lack the genetic propensity for Vegas' particular temptations--My vices include spending too much time on the internet and accumulating more books than I can ever read--I guess those vices deliver me evil (so to speak). Actually, I was raised here and in my youth I went to a church (which still exists) called Our Lady of Las Vegas...I know it sounds too good to be true, but it IS true. I specifically remember asking my catechism teacher what a virgin was (since it was the big thing about Mary that everyone cared about)--
As for crashing after tequila and chocolate and goats--it's fine with me, but I haven't got a lot of space to stash people (especially those covered in chocolate) though I can manage 10 or 12 goats in my backyard. If I still had the trampoline, I could put the inebriated and somnolent there, but alas...
