Anyone interested in trying Indoor "Skydiving" in Las Vegas, as a pre-TAM5 activity?
More Info here: www.FlyAwayIndoorSkydiving.com
Or, if anyone has any other cool ideas, you can try posting them here, as well, I suppose.

I was hoping to start with the puny Indoor version, before trying the outdoor version.
But, I might just go for the real deal, if that's what everyone else wants. It's not like I'm scared or nuthin'.
I heard the Indoor version is fun for beginners, 'cause it's not tandem, and you are free to move as you wish.

Wowbagger, I'm in on the indoor version (I see no good logical reason to jump out of a perfectly good airplane). In fact suggested it to Kittynh as a goal of mine for TAM5.
Some other things we did last year included about 8 skeptics going to a place called "The Gun Store", which allows you to rent and fire......wait for it...GUNS! Considering I had never fired a weapon in my life, it was rather interesting blasting a paper target with a Thompson Submachine Gun. I would like to go back and try a AK-47 this year...
I also encourage a visit to the Atomic Testing Museum, very well done and not heaviliy visited.
If you've never been to Vegas, a couple of hours in the evening at the Fremont Street experience is neat.
We went to Red Rock Canyon last year on Sunday and a gorup of us stay-overs went to Hoover Dam on Monday.
And that's just stuff I did. Others did a lot more than that.

http://www.grandcanyontourcompany.com/airtour.html?source=overtureIndeed, a fairly cool idea. But, I've already seen so much of the Grand Canyon over the years, this would not be a priority activity for me. But, if that's what the rest of y'all are doing, then I might be in, anyway. Who knows...

I disagree with this assessment, somewhat. I've been to Vegas a few times. The Freemont Street Experience Light Show is very nice, and the Sax player is talented. However, I would not want to spend hours there: The Freemont Street area is otherwise absurdly boring.

Abusrdly boring is an overstatement. Treb and exarch and xenzabar and I had a great time wandering around looking at the spooky jesus pictures and boobie-shaped lighters and being offered drugs and women.
It's fun in its own horribly garrish way.

Well, I'd like to try to put this to some sort of consensus. All those who wish to Indoor Skydive before TAM (probably the day before), please indicate so. (and please clearly indicate so. No cryptic responses, please.)
All those who really wish to do something else: outdoor skydive, firing AK-47s, etc. Please indicate so.
I know it's early. So, you can take your time to decide. No rush. But, the sooner we know what we're doing, the better.
If we get at least 5 folks for the Indoor thing, we could get a group discount!

If I am able to attend TAM5 (and I hold high hopes that I will be able), I'd like to do some actual skydiving. No tandem jumping, either.
At TAM4, I scoured the local publications for skydiving opportunities, but found only the indoor skydiving available. This struck me as odd, since you can get almost anything in Las Vegas, and I was certain that real skydiving had to be available from some business.
Thanks to Rebecca for the link!! Now I know that this could be done!
There are a lot of things that I have never done, and if I were to die tomorrow, I would have no regrets about not having done them. I've never ridden in a limousine, I've never imbibed Scotch, I've never done illegal drugs, I've never engaged in certain sexual activities ('nuff said), I've never been to a strip club, I've never been arrested, I've never appeared in a movie (unlike some of my relatives), I've never fathered or raised a child ... and I don't care whether any of these experiences ever happens.
But skydiving is something I'd like to do during my lifetime.
I'm am not an adrenaline junkie, or even a thrill-seeker. Far from it. But I do feel that it is important for me to control my fear, and not be controlled by my fear. Skydiving, I believe, would force me to confront my fear and overcome it.
Let me end with a little humor borrowed (I believe) from Reader's Digest's Humor in Uniform:
Paratroop Student: If my main chute fails to open, how much time do I have to open my reserve chute?
Paratroop Instructor: The rest of your life.

Just an FYI, we went to area 51 one year when we were in the area to watch the Leonids meteor storm. It was pretty underwhelming. But if you have extra time, Death Valley was great especially for the night sky and the moving stones (http://www.forteantimes.com/gallery/images/meteor.jpg), (takes 4 wheel drive or equivalent dirt road vehicle).

Penn & Teller are at the MGM Grand, which is approximately 87 miles from the Riviera both literally and figuratively. But, if you want to save on the cab ride, you can enjoy the Riviera's many attractions, such as "Crazy Girls Topless Revue" and "Elderly People Pulling Penny Slots."

OK, I'm awake now.
I's between 2 and 3 miles from the Riviera to the Rio. The Monorail goes close to both but you'd still walk a block or so on both ends. I have walked the whole distance more than once but it does hurt your feet if you don't have the right shoes. Don't know cab rates but my guess is they would beat the monorail unless you had a pass for the day anyway.
Has anyone bought their P&T show tickets? The web site doesn't have Jan 07 dates yet.
There's also plenty of parking for rental cars. Not that I plan to rent one.

There's also plenty of parking for rental cars. Not that I plan to rent one.The monorail blows! Last year I took it (at night). I walked a mile to get to it and then waited 10 minutes for it. When it finally came it dropped me off another 5000 ft from my destination. I'll gladly pay the cab for quick door-to-door service. But if we can car pool that would be even better. The walk may not be far but my time there is more valuable!
No, tickets are not on sale yet.

I figure those who wish to do so could hit the wind tunnel early in the day, and then do the real tandem jumping in the afternoon. Then, at night, if we survived, we can all watch P&T on stage.
That may be a bit much, and some may not be able to afford it. But, I am crazy enough, and I have the money. So: Let's put together some semblance of a schedule where all three activities are done, but do not conflict with each other!

Maybe three minutes is all you can really tolerate in there, but even by Vegas standards, that's pricey! Though I will admit to achieving an even higher burn rate on occasion at the craps table once or twice...
Thursday night we're planning to visit some of the aforementioned craps tables (I bought a lucky crystal so I just know we'll clean up!), Friday night we're seeing "O", Saturday I hear there's some party, and Sunday we'll repent for our sins of the previous three days. Who's with me?

Thursday night MAY be the poker tournament...
That's all I'm sayin...
But I'm in for craps at any other point in time - especially at Casino Royale with the 100X odds, or any of the better joints downtown (ElCo!!!)

Count me in. What night are you going? We should all book for the same night so we can car pool.I've gotta go. I missed it last year.

Well, if at least 5 of us go, we could get a group rate, and only pay about $35 a person.
If not, I suppose I could start a scholarship fund for those who can not afford the $70.

Keep me on the list for P&T. I was going to be going with my sister and brother in law anyway, but there is no reason we couldn't sync up with the TAMerites.

Let's talk about this more at TAM. Being Vegas and all it should be the perfect place to get married, plus I don't want to push my luck with derailing this thread too much.

I doubt that, but admit I do not have any evidence to back my doubts up, at this point in time. I like Firefly and the Serenity movie. However, Buffy never really held my interest.
Incidentally, two of the actors from Firefly were at Dragon*Con.
My photos with them are posted in the following links:

No, sorry. Only certain people are allowed to touch me, and the "specialness" they feel is my own.

Just making sure that no one invited Dick Cheney, right?
If he was invited, this plan may not be safe.

I'm up for outdoor skydiving and P&T. Anyone want to see Cirque du Soleil's O?
Gulliamo
12th November 2006, 11:19 PM
I watched Zumanity during last TAM. It was quite good - an odd mix of Cirque du Soleil and light porn. I would like to see La Reve (as well as P&T) if it doesn't conflict with any of the forum events.
http://shop.vegas.com/shows/showtimes2.jsp?show=764&lang=en#show_review
Which leads me to ask: Do we have a semi-accurate schedule of forum events? Last year I missed the forum party due to over-zealous ticket booking - I don't want to make that mistake again.

Just letting anyone know, who happens upon this thread: I am officially retracting the idea of Indoor Skydiving as a pre-TAM activity, myself, given the fact that there will be tons of other things I got to do before it.
I won't have time to do real skydiving, either.
Maybe next year.
(of course, if, in the unlikely event, someone else wants to be in charge of this activity, they can take it over.)

Having done it, I can say that the indoor skydiving is fun, but it takes 3-4 sessions to get the hang of it (or the float of it). Also, it's a lot more exhausting that you might expect, and I think there's a weight limit of 100 kilos or so.
When my family did it a few years back, we found that buying one of the packages and doing it over several days was the way to go.

I suppose that's a good point. I'll try again, next year, when everyone will be that much more bored with LV, they they might want to do this several times.
