Illinois Senator Barack Obama warns citizens at his 50th Town Hall meeting about gas guzzling, WPSD-TV reports.

It was among many points made to the standing room only audience at the Metropolis Community Center. Obama spoke on everything from DC politics to global warming.

He says part of the blame for the world's higher temperatures rests on gas guzzling vehicles. Obama says consumers can make the difference by switching to higher mileage hybrids.

Today the Senator said, "It would save more energy, do more for the environment and create better world security than all the drilling we could do in Alaska."

"After the meeting... Obama left in a GMC Envoy after admitting to favoring SUV's himself," claimed local News Channel 6.

Trying to win votes....or he is just an idiot?

Personally, I thought he was much smarter then this...

stop press - politicians are hypocrites!

It raises a good point though - for politicians to go on the record as "green" is asking for trouble.....every time you step on a plane, drive somewhere etc. etc. people are going to be at you....

which is a little unfair, seeing as for politicians security is pretty important - and walking places often not an option....or for that matter travelling without an entourage....

the obvious thing for politicians to do would be to not stick their heads over the parapet - so as to avoid this kind of flak.....

Guess you missed the report a couple of months ago regarding Hassert having a "green" press conference then leaving in a "green" car only to stop just down the road (where he thought he was out of sight of photogs but wasn't) and get back into his SUV for the rest of the trip back to his office.

As andyandy suggests, a news bulletin this is not.

Hardly. I once saw Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. buying a TV at Best Buy. No entourage at all. The store employees had to take the TV out of the box so it would fit in his Mercury Mountaineer w/ "US Congress" plates.

Properly used, an SUV is not wasteful. If you put six people in one where otherwise there would have been six (or even three) smaller vehicles, it saves a great deal of gasoline. It is only when people use SUVs as single or double-rider vehicles that they are wasteful.

Being a politician, it is likely Obama travels with a retinue.

Best Buy? What an enemy of the American factory worker and mom-and-pop business owner. Hypocrite!

You want to talk about political hypocrites, let's talk about "Compassionate Conservatives." :)

As I understand it, Obama's peeps are now saying that the SUV (GMC Envoy) that he is driving is a flexible fuel vehicle capable of running on E85. Whether or not it actually was using E85 at the time remains their little secret. Also, why that would make the Envoy less hypocritical considering that most of Obama's objections to SUVs centered on global warming is left unexplained.
