Can anyone enlighten me about whether the Buddha had anything to say about using mind-altering drugs such as alcohol or marijuana? Is there any evidence that he used marijuana himself (more likely than alcohol I suspect)?

I didn't know the Indians had cannibis thousands of years ago. Opium, maybe, but there's no evidence that Buddha smoked anything, and things like drug or alcohol addiction go against his whole idea of being free from desire. Perhaps some Buddhist hippies were trying to come up with an excuse to smoke pot religiously in the 1960's before they discovered Rasta...
