View Full Version : Downloading Online FPS as a torrent...

For all you gamers out there...whats the deal with downloading online games as a torrent?
I've heard that punkbuster(which monitors all cheating) will ban you for not having a legal serial number, yet some people have also said that isn't true.
I've been looking around quite a while to buy a good, FPS that will help me pass time while I go to University. I don't want to spend 60 bucks on a game, and then end up not liking it.
Battlefield 2142 just released a beta version, so I might end up buying that, but there are a couple others I would like to try too.
Help?

I thought about that too. If it is, the Mods can delete this thread.
There is already a thread going on about torrents, but I didn't wantto derail the subject line...

Help? BF2142 just invited people to register on their beta program I believe.
As for stealing (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/83700.html), you may get banned from that game by PB and all the company's other online games if they have centralised authentication (cf: BF2 does and so does Steam). Personally, I don't like spending money on stuff I might not like, but such is life and the vicissitudes thereof. Your call, really. "We are not here to censure sir, merely advise..."

Try the demo; 90% of games have them now.

It's true! :D
I played the BF1942 and BF2 demos a lot, but you won't get much worthwhile online action out of them these days.
You're right though Hagrok, you could spend weeks playing through the demos on nzone (http://www.nzone.com/page/home.html)

Yeah, I'll probably give that a try. Problem is, most demo releases don't have online players anymore. Especially if the full version has already come out.

Call of Jaurez and Prey are two fairly decent demos that will give you an idea of their gameplay. I don't think the full version of CoJ is out yet though. Prey is.
There really aren't any compelling FPSs out there right now. Everyone is waiting for Crysis. If you haven't seen some of the videos of this game:
http://www.incrysis.com/
There is much salivating going on over Crysis. The graphics and physics are above and beyond anything seen so far.
Oh, and Duke Nukem Forever should be out sometime this decade too. :D

Incredible, isn't it? It's the same guys that dropped Far Cry on us from out of the blue.
It's going to take a beast of a system to run. I've already upgraded to the Core 2 Duo and 2GB of ram. Just waiting for the next gen graphics cards to come out from NVIDIA and ATI AMD.

I still have to upgrade, but money is kinda tight right now, so it'll have to wait.
Some of the screenshots are just....wow. Even ET:Quake Wars doesn't look THAT good.

If you haven't already, go to the Downloads section and check out some of the videos. The screenshots are great, but the in-game videos are unbelievable.

Truely amazing. Funny thing is, I had no clue the game was being made. Thanks for the heads up. :D

My pleasure.
And I take no responsibility when this game comes out if it forces you to go broke upgrading your system. :)

Quake Wars is supposed to be around $75.
Of course the price will go down as the game gets older.

If you want a good current FPS (so long as you only want to play with other people) then I recommend FEARcombat, which is the freely available multiplayer portion of F.E.A.R.
Take a look at www dot joinfear dot com - you need to give them an email address to receive your key but that's it. The game is good fun if you have another 4 or 5 people (or more) to play against on a LAN or the Internet.
There are extra maps at www dot fearmaps dot com, as well. Also look out for the COOP mod that allows you and friends to play against the computer AI. I've yet to try that, but it sounds very cool.

That isn't on the market yet. So where is this mythical FPS that you were objecting to spendin $60 on?

Quake Wars was on of them. I'm pretty sure BF:2142 will be around 60 bucks as well.
At our local Staples, almost ALL the new games are around 60 bucks.

Keep in mind that downloading games from Torrents really does hurt the guys who you want to continue making PC games. Game Studios go out of business all the time, especially the small guys who actually make interesting games; every sale counts.

Indeed.
I guess its not like the music, or movies, although its hard to understand why someone even buys a CD these days. :D
Either way, I'm downloading the Fear MP right now, actually it just finished, so I'll check that out.
Once I move into my new apartment, with UNLIMITED bandwidth, I'll get to downloading many of the demos people are talking about.

FEAR has pretty good single player; I imagine the multiplayer is awesome. I'd play it, but I tend to die instantly when facing actual human opponents :)

Okay I have a problem.
For some reason I can't connect to any of the servers. I have PB enabled, but each time I try to connect, it waits for 2 min, then says disconnected from server.
Help!!!

Just a guess but the servers might be dropping you due to latency issues or high ping times. If you know the address of the server check the ping times. Some servers can be set to drop high ping players. I don't know if FEAR is like that or not.
Oh yeah, I buy CDs and DVD-A for sound quality. MP3 are passable in the car but not on my home system.;)

I haven't used a game with PB for some time, but it used to require regular updates and would prevent you from connecting to servers if you weren't properly updated. You might want to check out that possibility.

You need the stop getting your MP3s from some dodgy P2P system then :)
Quality VBR MP3s should stand up very well to an ABX test, I'm sure.

I don't download MP3s at all. All my MP3s are ripped myself using LAME at the highest quality settings at 320kbps not even VBR. In the car they are fine on the home system they don't cut it, allthough on some material it can be hard to tell. On a long loud listening session MP3s give me listener fatigue. For background music they're fine.

Interesting. Everyone I can find on the net who have done any sort of testing between CD and MP3 can't spot any difference whatsoever at high bitrates, so long as their encoder is decent enough.
It would be interesting if you performed a blind test and see how you go, but perhaps not a good use of your time if you only notice the difference after some extended listening.
