SO DEMANDING!

Fine. 25 through 48 are up, just for you. :P Check that URL again and make sure you refresh. The pretty scenic ones are of Tulum Mexico, when some of the Adventurers went to check out the ruins they have. Unfortunately, I bit off more than I could chew with the weather and had to flee the ruins early. However, I did get a few good shots of the outside of the ruins before I did, so all is not lost.

As for her being a forum member, I have absolutely no idea. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough, though.

I've been to Tulum once. Beautiful!

And who are (URL)these?

Tulum is pretty, but it is a fairly run down tourist spot(Atleast, the port our ferry went to when we arrived).

As for who those two people are, that would be myself(on the left) and Kat, my wife, on the right.

Also. More pictures up for you. 49 to 72.

Oh. Please note that two pictures have a fantastic view of one of my fingers. :)

Wow, it really was an "Amazing Cruise".

We stayed an extra night in Ft Lauderdale, so we just got in. While it is really nice to be home, I sure would not have complained to have that trip last a few more days.

Here is a picture I am pretty pleased to be in. For those who didn't make the cruise (this will be too easy for those who made the cruise, so keep quiet), can you figure out who each of these people are?

[PIC REMOVED BY JEFF - SORRY!]

For those of you who were on the cruise, I want all your digital images and video that you would be willing to share. I am going to put together a package of DVD-R's and send them to the mailing address of all those who went on the cruise. This is not going to be some professional production or anything. This is just going to be a stack of DVD-ROMs with directories of images and video, sorted by the name of the cruiser who provided it. I want images at their full resolution, more on this later. Really, send plenty of yourselves. We all have pictures of the other missed. I also have many pictures of all of you, including all the photos that were shot on my camera at the farewell meeting. And I would just like to have many more pictures of most of the rest of you, I'm sure the rest of the cruisers feel the same. I've seen previews of pictures from several people before we finished the cruise, and there are more than a couple great ones that I'll be excited to have copies of.

A couple details...

I'll be sending out an email to all the cruisers (so that even the ones who aren't on the forum will know) requesting that they forward me whatever that they are willing to share when I figure out how I want to receive them. And those cruisers, reading this now, wait til you get this email from me before sending anything.... Just keep this in mind before you make any irreversible decisions with your images.

It's going to take me a while to get this all out, several weeks at least. A month or two is certainly possible. Besides just being slow because I have this problem called a job, there are several other things that will add delay. Once the set is compiled, I will send preview copies to all of the speakers to make sure there is nothing sensitive in the photos or video clips from the lectures. I'll then wait a reasonable time for them to reply (and remember, they are all busy people too) and it'll take me some time to get all the DVD's duplicated, blah, blah blah. I have access to a 20-DVD at a time high speed burner, so that will help out a bit.

For those of you who didn't go on the cruise and would like a copy.... I was going to ask that you cover my expenses for your DVDs and shipping. Instead, I've decided to ask you to make a donation to the JREF in whatever size you feel appropriate, it needn't be large, $10 even. But, don't let me discourage you from doing more if the mood strikes. Or, you could renew your membership as an option, if it's due.

I will not be reducing the resolution on any of the images. They are huge on disk, but are suitable for printing to any reasonable size. The best of them could probably be printed at 30 inches by 40 inches with satisfying results. The pictures above was shot at high ISO with no flash in a dim casino. 8 x 10 would be about as big as I dare go with that one. Anyway, since I couldn't possibly guess which picture someone might want to have printed , I will just make the pile of DVDs as large as necessary. People receiving the disks are then free to compile their own sets with just the content that interests them and at the resolution that meets their needs.

While I won't be reducing the resolution as I stated above, I will be white balance and exposure correcting all the images. For those of you sending images to me, go ahead and send those images even if they don't look so hot. You might be surprised at just what can be salvaged, so don't throw those way-too-dark shots away just yet. I can't do much for images with focus problem, feel free to toss those.

The caveats....

I haven't run this plan past any of the JREF staff as it exists in its latest incarnation, so it is still subject to revision.

As such, don't any of you go donating yet. In fact, I'd prefer you wait until after I announce that I have the disks compiled and I am ready to begin duplication. I'll also be able to figure the costs by then and give a better basis for an approiate donation.

I will ask anyone contributing images to agree to a copyright statement that lays out a couple of ideas: The individual photographer retains the copyrights to their images; but specifically grants the people receiving the disks pretty broad NON-commercial use priveleges; grants the JREF pretty broad use in general. Any legal eagles on the board are free help me compose something reasonable for this part. I'll have this finalized and prominent in the email to all the cruisers requesting their digital images and video.

I make no promise to use all the images or video clips that are sent in. I expect mostly to exlude items because they were beyond salvaging during exposure correction, because they are highly duplicate, or stuff like that.

And a couple more photos, I hope no one complains if I post a few more.

Hi guys! Boo took this great shot (above) as well. She took most of the shots on my camera during the farwell party. Thanks, Boo.

And one more fine example of photography provided by Boo.

And a tremendous new friend looking a bit tired, I can't imagine why.... A shared love of wine got us talking, I never thought drinking wine would ever be so beneficial. Check out that shirt!

Scott, if you're interested, I'd be happy to lend my services to creating some HTML index pages w/thumbnails to the full size pics. Please let me know.

Nothing complicated, the big trick is I'd need the full set of images (which will obviously be large) to make the thumbnails from. You'd just get a web page something like this for every contributor:

http://elspectre.net/cgi-bin/site?id=longbeachsunset

Without the gray/color mouseover effect, and of course themed appropriately. No rush, I can do it in a few minutes (re-using code that generates my thumbnail pages), so you can wait and see how many photos you get and then decide.

Ha! The Bloody Mary *was* my first meal of the day, Mr. Smartypants.

I kid, I kid. I did actually eat breakfast pretty much every morning in the cabin with coffee and orange juice and no vodka. Damn, I miss room service. And granola. (I'm eating Doritos as a sort of lunch-dinner as I type this.) But you may be onto something with the 11-11:15 thing.

OK, a few more pictures that didn't come out entirely bad..

Here's some the ancient Mayan City of Tumun (or something like that... ) What the pictures don't show is the brutal heat of the sun that cooked most of us before we had seen all of the city...it wasn't the temperature per se, it was the lower longitude...

And yes, that is me in the second picture..

You are certainly welcome to keep the mouse over effect going, its very nice. I suspect it will take more than a few minutes, even if it is completely automated.

I have over 500 pictures in the acceptable to put on the disk pile, exceeding 2GB in all. I have some from Mario (he transferred them to my laptop while still on ship). That is 227 more for another 1GB+. A fast machine will be quite a while just generating the thumbnails. And who knows how many I'll have on the way.

I can't wait to see what we get together in total.

You can't suppress the truth, Jeff: Hal has finally been outed as a hippie. For years, he was smoking weird herbs (oregano, thyme and, most damaging, rhubarb), while experimenting with moral issues, and working undercover with the Black Panthers to topple the gubmint...

Felicity Oh, yeah, I totally recognize you guys! So awesome to see you in the forums and to have met you on the trip! As I keep trying to explain my vacation to people here at home (trying desperately not to look like a cult member), I find myself repeating..."but..but..you don't understand...I just never meet that many people I have that much in common with...core things...where I'm excited with every new conversation...yet everyone is different and interesting and we even had these really young couples and..." and that's usually when I lose them. And a confession of being totally and utterly wrong......

Duppy (believe this or not) was the subject of discrimination by me, at the beginning of the cruise. In my experience, it is very common that especially pretty women tend to have pretty severe emotional/social skill deficiencies. It is my theory that they get that way by having all the men they interact with over backwards to please them, for no other reason than they are pretty. They become spoiled brats.

When I first met Duppyraces in the lobby while picking up Michael Shermer from the Holiday Inn, I thought to myself, "Who's this? Shermer has a groupie already? Oh, she is even going with us to the JREF!" and I realized that she was going on the cruise. Then it quickly turned to, "Wow, she looks like trouble."

I am usually a pretty good judge of people. Even from the first moment, I typically peg people about right. I blew this one in spectacular fashion.

She turned out to be friendly, laid back, un-demanding, witty, and generally just fun to be around. Sometimes, it is really nice to be surprised.

.

All of us make judgements based on experience - which is called 'rational discrimination" What separates us from knuckle-draggers is that we are able to adjust our views based on new inputs. One of my very good friends, also an engineer from Colorado School of Mines, looks so much like Halle Berry (face, body, everything) that if she had a tan she'd be stopped for autographs. It causes her no end of problems at work, and I've noticed, when we go out together, that the quickest turn-off for her is when a man comments on her looks early on...

Men probably don't notice this, but men themselves, who are "Ken doll, Calendar Men of USC" often tend to be arrogant (even without any other redeeming qualities) and quite often treat women rather poorly, for the same reason that Scott described - women fall all over them, flatter them, try to flirt with them. My ex is extremely good-looking, tall, athletic, all that, but he's a bit oblivious to it and so not too bad (not too smart, either). A formerly good friend turned temporary romantic interest was the same, but had a sense of entitlement about himself because of his look and build - all about appearances and trappings. He thought all women were out to 'snare' him because of his looks and job (that relationship lasted until I got to know him well...) Pretty guys all.

My best friend and love-of-my-life is best described as 'average' - height, looks, the way he dresses. Slightly balding, slightly paunchy. But he's brilliant, funny, the most kind and generous person I know, hugely successful self-made millionaire businessman/engineer with several high-tech patents and a piano scholarship to Julliard in his youth. I would not have looked at him twice on the street - the 'rational discrimination' and gene-selecting part of my brain wouldn't have noticed him. So it works both ways.

Being female, and in my youth fairly attractive, I experienced some of the same type of reaction, even from my engineering professors!

Well, you were right about two things. I have severe emotional/social skills deficiencies, and I am trouble. When I look in the mirror, I see an awkward 13 year old pimply computer geek boy with a Brooklyn makeover, so it does always take me aback to realize what people's first impressions are. I was talking to Banachek and mentioned the Demon Haunted World at one point. He looked shocked that I'd ever read a book. He asked me to repeat myself, and then admitted that he was surprised. lol. Methinks it's time to don a smarter looking mask. ;) But being Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous can be so addictive. Thanks for the final grade, teach. Boo You have got to be f'n kidding me on the first part (YOU?? A WALLFLOWER? EVER? ROFL! I couldn't get a date to the prom), but I like that last line. ::grin:: To be honest, when I arrived at the JREF, I was a little nervous because sometimes I can be really shy (in person, not so much online, lol) and have no clue what to say, especially when you know everyone around is *really* bright and well, like when you don't want to intrude on conversations and all that, but you don't want anyone to notice you're shy and standing in front of a wall looking around, because that makes it worse. So I walk in, stumble around trying to look like I know what I'm doing, and this amazing creature starts talking to me. Stunning eyes, wide, warm smile, outgoing with that sort of sexy, natural confidence we all wish we had, and she made me feel instantly at ease. I felt relief wash over me. And then she introduces herself as "Boo". I was stunned. I was like, "YOU'RE Boo? And all the old conversations in Phil's Pub flash before my eyes like the green lines of code from Matrix, and then...wait, WHERE ARE THE BOOTS!" It was our defining, bonding moment. Thank you for that, and I love you too, Boo.

Anyway, no more Duppy effect talk. It'll turn into the "Duppy's not all that" effect (if it hasn't already) and then I'll be really insecure the next time. Good thing about this group is you really can't stay awkward for long. :)

Agreed!

I had just written this in another thread just before reading your post.

We've got to find a way to recruite a large enough voting group of American's to make a difference on this. They (the people running in elections) need to know that our community even exists. They're always worried about the "Hispanic vote", the "Black vote", the "Catholic Vote", or the "Someother Vote", but it is never the "Rational vote" or the "Skeptical Vote". We need to start doing a better job of converting our friends. We really need to start recruiting. We need grow a lot. And we need to look and act enough like a community that we begin to be recognized as such.

Should I send that to Hal?

Why is it that the women who are shy or unsure about their weight or looks the ones who don't have to be? And here's another really odd thing I've noticed: every one of the skepchicks would have had me too intimidated to talk to them, back in high school (and for several years after); I would never have worked up the guts to ask any of them out. And they're all complaining about being geeks, homely, whatever!

I like my taste in women and, quite frankly, I take it as a personal insult when you guys talk about yourselves that way. Knock it off! All of you!

Oh, yeah, I totally recognize you guys! Anyway. I really enjoyed getting to know you.
We enjoyed meeting you too, duppy! I think I have it in me to become a cruise addict. I'm already looking at the Royal Caribbean website and thinking about planning something for next year...

The day after we got back I found myself in Borders with a 30% off coupon and wound up buying Why Darwin Matters. The clerk commented that it looked interesting, and I proudly said, "I met the author last week!" I even name-dropped Randi, so maybe the clerk will be inspired to investigate further.

Awww, thanks! I hope to see you, the Beadys, mumchup, and any other New Englanders I may have forgotten at local events in the future. We met SkepticScott at just such an event a month or so before the cruise.

Mrs. Beady must be part rabbit, I have a picture of her with bunny ears too. I'll have to post it when I get home.
I am now imagining the Beady home photo album. Pictures of them with all manner of interesting and important people, in all sorts of exotic locales, and a pair of little pink antennae emerging from Mrs. Beady's head in every one. :)

No, only two kids that she'll admit to.

One of the group photos from the Goodbye party would have had Randi with bunny ears, except someone tried to break my fingers.

It's been my experience that women who were wallflowers in high school often bloom spectacularly. One of my favorite quotes, and I wish I knew the author to give credit where it's due, is
A beautiful girl is an accident of nature; a beautiful woman is a work of art.

Thought about it, but then I realized that it was The Group that made the trip for me. If at least some of you guys aren't along, I'd just as soon spend a week at Disneyworld or Key West. Of course, if any of you want to get together at either of those places... :)

Hi Rob! I was hoping you'd show up! Hanging out in the cruise terminal with you two ahead of time was such fun. Remember, sign your NAME and the DATE on the form. And be sure to bring an extra pair of underwear to TAM in case they lose my luggage. You are going to TAM, aren't you?

LOL....that guy in the cruise terminal was a tenacious li'l bugger wasn't he? Extra under-garments will be packed in case of another luggage scare.

The way that you asked about me going to TAM 5 did not seem like a question, more like a statement. The "aren't you?" was a clever facade to make your statement look inquisitive. I am planning on making it to TAM5, but I do not have a definite answer as of yet. Right now I am looking at about 90% Yes / 10% No.

BTW, Boo, I have another barbed-wire necklace (like the one I always wear that you liked) if you want it. I can give it to you at TAM should my yes percentage increase.

Reminds me of my favorite line from Weird Science, which for some reason isn't in the IMDB memorable quotes list.

I don't happen to think of brains as aesthetically pleasing in the least, but that would be why I didn't follow in my father's and grandather's steps and become a doctor. (And does Duppy have some crazy CAT scan vision or something? I knew it! ... she's an android!! An android that likes bloody marys.)
