Wow, the sycophantic duo are really on a roll this week. Today the self-indulgent theory (and by that I mean utter crap) that is cosmic ordering. To think that all this time, all the starving of the world needed was a little wishful thinking. Someone tell Sir Bob about this breakthrough!

Wednesday 5th July *TODAY*
Channel 4 5pm - 6pm
Richard & Judy
"Cosmic Ordering
Sometimes we all wish our lives could change for the better but we don’t always know how to change things! Do you wish for a new love, a new car, or a new career? According to a new theory called the Cosmic Ordering, you don't have to wish, you simply place an order for the good things in life and they will be delivered. This groundbreaking theory has swept the globe - Even Noel Edmunds is a believer and now it seems we can all place a cosmic order!
Astrologist Jonathan Cainer joins Richard & Judy to tell us how he believes we can change our lives and realise our dreams."

The Uncertainty Principle is a chance for BBC7 to dip its toes into the stranger frontiers of science, a place where all is not as it seems. We're going to kick off with the weighty subject of gravity, or rather its weird sister: anti-gravity.

Tuesday 11th July *TONIGHT*, 50 Terrible Predictions, Sky 3 (Freeview-able), 9pm - 11pm. Chances are there'll be an appearance by some self-professed (prophessed?) Anointed One whose doomsday date calculations were cock-eyed. Repeated on Friday at 11.30pm.

More on that divining piece in this week's Broadcasting House from BBC Radio 4:
"There are said to be thousands of people in Britain who practise the ancient art of water divining. A few charge for their services, but most keep pretty quiet about it. In Jersey, though, water diviners are front page news, as they're blocking both reform of the island's water laws and plans to introduce new water meters. From Jersey, Chris Ledgard reports."

From this week's All In The Mind (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/science/allinthemind.shtml):
"The Placebo Effect
A simple sugar pill, or placebo can sometimes be just as effective in relieving symptoms as genuine medication. Experiments have shown that the power of placebo can work - just as long as the patient believes the pill they're swallowing contains the drug in question. But the mystery remains - how exactly does the mind bring about a cure?
Professor Nicholas Humphrey, an evolutionary psychologist from the London School of Economics and Dr Dylan Evans, a senior lecturer at the University of the West of England join Kwame McKenzie to discuss."

Thursday 27th July
BBC2 7.30pm - 8pm
Mythbusters
Radio Times' David Butcher writes: "This is one of those programmes aimed at the 12-year-old in all of us, wihch in my case is a big target. It involves fires, explosions, staple guns, blast chambers, something called "ballistics gel" - all the rigmarole of film special effects, but put to use here to debunk urban myths and solve conundrums such as: will a coin thrown off a skyscraper kill someone when it gets to the ground? And which gets you wetter in the rain - walking or running?
Doing the experiments are a pair of Fx bods, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage. Hyneman has a Dick Strawbridge moustache, Sven-style rimless pecs and a raggedy "soul patch" on his chin. But that's not enough to prove his eccentricity: he tops off the look with a beret. But the show is mostly great fun and curiously educational"

Coming this Sunday, it's the End of the World with Yvette Fielding.

Sunday 23rd July
BBC1 10am - 11am
Heaven and Earth
Includes:
"End of the World
American foreign policy is a defining factor in any conflict in the Middle East. But how much is the American view of the world shaped by religion, and in particular, evangelical Christianity? Recently, "end times" theology seems to have a growing influence on US foreign policy.
Many American Christians see the Jewish people as central to Armageddon - with the second coming of Jesus to rule, from Jerusalem, over a re-made world. They see Israel's creation in 1948 as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy. The BBC's Religious Affairs Correspondent, Robert Pigott, assesses the source and significance of the theology, which some say, influences lawmakers and their born-again president - in the world's most powerful country."

"Record of the Week: Yvette Fielding
At 17 Yvette Fielding became the youngest ever presenter of Blue Peter. But in recent years she has become better known for her role as host on Living TV's Most Haunted. This month she publishes a new book Ghost Hunters with psychologist and fellow presenter Ciaran O'Keeffe, which looks at the evidence for ghosts and other paranormal phenomena such as orbs and poltergeists.
She joins Carrie and David to discuss her belief in the paranormal, and to give us her view on the week's big religious and ethical news stories."

Un-freakin'-believable. Now the Indigos hit mainstream TV.

Monday 7th August
Channel 4 9pm - 10pm
Cutting Edge: My Child's Psychic
Radio Times' Sarah Dempster writes:
"Nicola is a woman on a mission. Believing her 15-year-old daughter Heather to be "at a critical point in her spiritual develpoment", she resolves to nurture her "psychic" and "healing" abilities - a decision that appears to entail holding crystals, mumbling about angels and resting their hands on people's ears.
Though Nicola is convinced Heather is an "Indigoan Crystal Child" (you probably won't understand what it means, either, even when a woman with dangly earrings explains it to you), Simone's perception of her son is more prosaic. She merely believes eight-year-old Oliver can see dead people.
While you may find yourself throwing pieces of fruit at the screen every time Simone and Nicola attribute their child's active imagination to psychic powers, the producers of this astonishing documentary clearly deserve some sort of rosette - or, perhaps, a nice bit of crystal - for their ability to cover such a bonkers subject with a straight face."

"Whilst our memories can be a reliable asset - they can deceive us badly. This programme explores how much we can trust our memories and what happens when they are called on to recall important information in, for example, a court of law? How easily can our memories for important events be manipulated without us realising it?
Professor Elizabeth Loftus, recently listed at the most influential female psychologist of all time, has spent many years researching the fallibility of memory. Her breakthrough came when she deliberately planted false memories of highly charged events into subjects without them realising it.
The research has had enormous legal repercussions and has questioned some of our most basic assumptions about the mind. Also in this programme, is déjâ vu a glitch or a sign that the mind does indeed have supernatural powers? Is this just another example of the mind's fragility?"

There's some interesting stuff coming up over the next week ...

I'll start with a short report on the popularity of psychic schools aired earlier today on Five News and likely to be repeated later at 5.30pm or 7pm. ASKE member Max B has his brief say.

Sunday sees the final part of the Miracles of Jesus:

Sunday 20th August
BBC1 6.35pm - 7.35pm
The Miracles of Jesus
"3/3. The resurrection was hailed as the miracle of miracles and became a pillar of the Christian faith. But why? Rageh Omaar travels from Jerusalem to Rome to find out exactly what Jesus's return from the dead meant to his followers and how the idea transformed an obscure Jewish sect into a world religion"

On Monday, it's witches on the wireless ...

Monday 21st August
BBC Radio 3 8.15pm - 8.35pm
Twenty Minutes: It Must Be Witchcraft
RT's Jacqueline Wheeler writes: "In 1662, Isobel Gowdie, a middle-aged Scottish housewife, told a rapt courtroom of her secret life of moonlit flight, shape-shifting and erotic trysts with the devil. Between the 15th and 17th century, millions of women across Europe were tortured and burnt for crimes of witchcraft - or were they? As presenter Gary Lachman probes the motives behind Isobel's confession, he reveals how popular perceptions of the witch trials are based on wildly exaggerated accounts penned by suspect historians, and sensationalised by horror movies. Isobel was neither persecuted nor executed. What emerges from this fascinating analysis of her story is a troubled woman whose dark, escapist fantasies finally overwhelmed her, compelling her to seek atonement for crimes she could never have committed."

... and Cutting Edge gives us another programme to sacrifice an evening for:

Monday 21st August
Channel 4 9pm - 10pm
Cutting Edge: Cult Killer
RT's Alison Graham: "Rick Rodriguez, by all accounts, was a charming and endearing young man with a devoted wife and a life that stretched before him. But he was irreparably damaged having grown up in a sinister cult that exposed him to routine sexual abuse throughout his childhood. In a stark opening to this excellent documentary, we see what is effectively Rodriguez's "suicide note" - a tormented, rambling home-video recording of him waving a gun and announcing a need for revenge.
It's a ghastly, shocking, sad story of a lost soul who yearned for a normal life. But Rodriguez could never escape his past, having grown up in the Children of God cult as the sexual plaything of its grotesque, discredited leader and Rodriguez's adoptive "father" David Berg and others. It's a harrowing tale, with no happy endings."

On Tuesday, a similar tale to the recent When Satan Came To Town (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/real_story/4595158.stm).

Tuesday 22nd August
BBC2 9pm - 10.30pm
Accused
"The Orkney child abuse case was one in a series of high-profile scandals that rocked Britain in the late 1980s and early 90s. In February 1991, police and social workers swooped on four families from the remote Scottish island of South Ronaldsay - and took nine children into care. Amid allegations of Satanism, a fight ensued to have the children returned and the families' names cleared. In this gripping and disturbing film, parents, children and social workers involved describe their experience. What drove the social workers to act so drastically? How did a campaign galvanise the community? The children themselves reveal what really happened in their disclosure sessions with the social workers."

Briefly, Was Anybody There?, an investigation of spiritualism, is shown again on BBC2's OU TV at 5am early on Saturday morning and there's another repeat of Housebusters on Five later the same day at 12.45pm, although I'll bet it's not the Ruislip episode which is the only one I've missed. Grrrr. Creationism is discussed a week later (Sat25Aug06) in another showing of The Argument From Design again on BBC2's OU TV at 5am. This week's Science Friday looks at Ghost Hunting (http://www.sciencefriday.com/pages/2006/Aug/hour2_081106.html).

Looking at next week's schedules, three programmes of interest immediately stand out ...

Monday 4th September
ITV1 11pm - 11.45pm
Haunted Homes
"2/6. The psychics and sceptics investigate John and Katrina Elvin's house in Newcastle, where the ghostly figure of a man has been standing in their bedrooms and on their landing."

Monday 4th September (repeated at 4.25am on Friday 8th September)

The Beginner's Guide to L Ron Hubbard
"Hardeep Singh Kohli seeks spiritual enlightenment through the teachings of the founder of the Church of Scientology. He gets off to a bad start when he's rejected by the faith, but Ron's Org, a group that split from the Church in the 1980s, offer him an olive branch."

Thursday 7th September
BBC Radio 4 4.30pm - 5pm (and archived afterwards)
The Material World
"Subjects such as telepathy, intuition and life after death have traditionally been off limits for the British Association's annual Festival of Science. Not any more. Before an audience at this year's Festival in Norwich, Quentin Cooper confronts a panel of scientific heretics and sceptics to assess just how much evidence there is for mind extending beyond the physical brain."
I'm sensing the names 'French' and 'Sheldrake' and the words 'morphic' and 'field'.

There's also an abundance of conspiracy-related broadcasts coming up on Freeview channels, starting with Who Killed Diana? on Sky Three tonight at 9pm and continuing with The Diana Conspiracy tomorrow (Wed30Aug06) on More4 also at 9pm. In the same vein, the Daily Express (surprise, surprise) takes time out today from splashing Diana death conspiracy theories across its front page to splash Diana death conspiracy theories across its centre pages in its Diana Dossier, which it promises to continue all week*. Yeah, thanks for that. Expect a good number of those "many unanswered questions which still surround the death of the People's Princess" to be addressed in the aforementioned progs. Expect the Daily Express to overlook these responses in future articles.

*ETA: Comes with a free double page spread on crashed UFO cover-ups today too!

Journalist Sanjiv Bhattacharya embarks on a long search for this elusive individual, who hasn't been seen in public for over a year. The FBI have put him on their most wanted list (http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/fugitives/fugitives.htm) and there's a $100,000 bounty on his head. He faces charges of arranging marriages between underage girls and older men. Can the reporter succeed where the authorities have failed and track down the self-styled prophet?"

Uri Geller has been dowsing all his life. He may have come to the world’s attention by bending spoons, but he made his fortune using this ancient art. Now, he has produced a kit and book that will enable others to try their hand at dowsing.
Uri describes the science behind dowsing as a combination of biology, psychology and physics. “There’s nothing supernatural about dowsing: it’s a physical phenomenon, a human ability employed by the British and US armies as well as every major oil corporation and water provider.”
Mike McClean went to Uri’s beautiful house on the river Thames to try his hand at dowsing."

Newsnight
"STEM CELLS
We'll have an update on the investigation into stem cell therapies that
we broadcast last week.
We revealed that a company called Advanced Cell Therapeutics was
charging thousands of pounds for injections of stem cells, using cells
that are not for human use.
What's more, the cells can be bought for a fraction of the price on the
internet. Since our investigation, the company has contacted patients
who were booked in, to say they are suspending treatments in order to
start clinical trials, and offered a full refund.
Meanwhile Susan Watts has been back to Rotterdam with a patient who was due to have the therapy. Her husband decided he wanted to go to the
clinic anyway to have a "full and frank conversation" with the doctor
who would have administered the cells."

I wish they'd keep the focus on the practice rather than the practitioners. After ACT vanish, there'll still be plenty of other cowboys offering this miracle treatment to the desperate.

This Sunday's Heaven and Earth Show will feature a guest who doesn't believe we're being told the truth about the events surrounding 9/11, apparently. What that has to do with religious matters is beyond me. Perhaps he'll be asking us to believe his version of events on faith alone? More details soon.

This just in from the 'Let's ignore Ofcom broadcasting code section 1.19*' department ...

Derek Acorah appears to be starting a new series on LK Today (weekdays, ITV1, 8.40am - 9.25am) investigating viewers' paranormal happenings.

*"1.19 Demonstrations of exorcisms, occult practices and the paranormal (which purport to be real), must not be shown before the watershed or when children are particularly likely to be listening. Paranormal practices which are for entertainment purposes must not be broadcast when significant numbers of children may be expected to be watching, or are particularly likely to be listening. (This rule does not apply to drama, film or comedy.)"
I suppose there's an argument to be made that it's just comedy.

"Meaning of "when children are particularly likely to be listening":
This phrase particularly refers to the school run and breakfast time, but might include other times."

Dawkins on the supernatural. That short American chap with the white beard will have something to say about this in his next commentary, I'll bet.

'The God Delusion
And Jeremy has been talking to the scientist Richard Dawkins, whose new book The God Delusion is set to be as controversial as his previous ones.
Here's a taster: "I am not attacking any particular version of God or gods. I am attacking Gods, all gods, anything and everything supernatural, wherever and whenever they have been or will be invented.' "

Edit: It wouldn't surprise me to see Dawkins on GMTV's The Sunday Programme (6am - 7.25am) in the next couple of weeks either. They usually pick up on things like this.

How the origins of the world is taught in our schools has long been a contentious issue. This month the debate is hotting up as a group of scientists demands a meeting with Education Secretary Alan Johnson.
They are angry that Government is refusing to allow 'Intelligent Design' to be taught in school science lessons, Ministers having restricted discussion of the theory to Religious Studies lessons. Supporters of 'Intelligent Design' claim they have scientific evidence which points to the existence of a 'designer' who created the universe. Proponents of traditional Darwinist theories maintain that an evolutionary process lead to the development of life and can find no evidence of a 'designer' behind the birth of our world.

In particular, he claimed that from the turn of the Millennium until 2012, we would see chaos establish itself across the globe as war, economic collapse and terror took hold. Much derived at the time, Icke now has a global following who believe that his prophecies have come true. This documentary asks whether Icke was right.

Cleveland Twenty Years on
"Some 20 years ago, the Cleveland scandal made headline news. It made us question how widespread child sexual abuse was, how infallible doctors were, and how powerful social workers ought to be.
Now, Jenny Cuffe investigates the roots of the crisis and examines how relevant those questions still are. She talks to people, some have never spoken publicly before, who were caught up in events in Cleveland in 1987, including now-adult children who were taken away from home, and professionals who were involved in making tough decisions in the maelstrom that followed."

Psychic scams
What would you do if someone sent a letter to you saying that your house was cursed....or that someone wanted to harm you? Would you just laugh and throw it away or would you respond to their offer of help? Every year bogus psychics fleece the public to the tune of some 40 million pounds. It causes misery to thousands of people...and yet it's almost impossible to track the fraudsters down.

Children of God - child abuse
Cover of Not Without My Sister Three sisters, Kristina, Celeste and Juliana, join Gloria to talk about their harrowing upbringing within the new religious movement known then as 'The Children of God'.
From the age of three, the girls were considered to be sexual beings by their 'guardians'. They were abused and were the victims of advances from men old enough to be their grandfather. They were denied formal schooling; they were forced to beg on the streets and were beaten for 'crimes' as benign as reading an encyclopaedia.
Eventually the sisters escaped, along with their mother, when they realised that the group's leader was a false prophet. The three sisters, now grown women, have started their own organisation called RISE International to help other victims of abusive religious groups. Their new book is called Not Without My Sister."
