No, there's no plans for another TAMOz at this point. But the Australian Skeptics Convention will be in Canberra in November!

Hello all! Pleased to have joined this forum. While I'm here, I hope to challenge myself and my views and expand my critical thinking skills. Goodness knows I desperately need to.

You see, my belief in woo tends to be cyclical: when I was young, I wanted to believe in all sorts of garbage. I quickly became disillusioned, and for quite a few years I adopted an atheistic, there-is-no-supernatural stance. Recently, my views began changing and I started to gain a more spiritual view of the world. And because I lacked a proper filter to critically judge woo, I ended up in quite an embarrassing incident. That incident lead me to start looking carefully at what views I was subscribing to.

Then I found this forum! It's exactly what I didn't know I was looking for- a place to critically discuss things that some people view as a matter of faith.

And I'm rambling. Sorry for the wordiness of this introduction post. In any case, I hope that I will enjoy my stay here! I can't say that I enjoy goat's milk, though, sorry if that's a problem.

Hello All,

While a FEW of you will like me, the odds are high many of you will not.

Got my nick name "Nasty Neil" from John Shensky, a good friend and an NCR Electronics Division co-worker. When I asked John why he had chosen it, he replied:

"It is because you are always telling the truth and most people do not like hearing the truth."

I can provide references from people I have known (some for over 50 years) who will attest I am one of the most truthful people they have ever known,

I'm a Agnostic Atheist Activist whose has been a Atheist for 68 of my 77 years and an Atheist Activist for over half a century.

I am a member of 3 Atheist groups "American Atheists," "Atheists United" and the "Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers".

And I was a 20 year member of FFRF until they recently both LIED to me and refused to print a letter to the editor.

I have lived in more places, (3 countries 10 states, and 20 cities,) as well as at higher altitudes (14,300 feet) & in a "cloud forest" As well as closer to the Atlantic (within 100 ft) and the Pacific. (within 20 ft,)

Had many more professions (a few are life guard, deep sea diver, paratrooper, manufacturing supervisor for NCR TRW and Magnavox and an industrial engineer for XEROX)

And as I've also done more varied types of things than most do, I am much more experienced as well as knowledgeable than are most my age. Traveled on or in more types of trains, ships, boats, cars trucks and aircraft than most.

I read at nearly double the speed (with high comprehension) of most college grads. Plus, my tested listening skills are four times better than those of nearly all others.

I also have a "Gifted Level' IQ. One which tests prove I use nearly double as effectively as most use theirs.

(( Pres. "the Liar" Obama, or as I call him ODUMA, proves that intelligence is like a man's penis as it is not how much you have, rather it how well you use it. And if ODUMA makes love as poorly as he thinks, I pity his wife! ))

So combining my experience, intelligence and the fact I normally research things to assure I have more than sufficient facts to back me up, the odds of my being logically, or factually proven wrong on any thing I comment on are low.

Last, aside from serving my country for nearly ten years, I've have repeatedly put my physical well being and my life on the line for others. I did so for Black Civil Rights more than a few times and each of the eight times I have been able to stop a crime being committed against others. (I stopped one two weeks ago at age 77 and had I been faster, it would have been two crimes in the last two weeks.)

So, I sure ain't no "Chicken Hawk"

Like Chris Hitchens, Tanny Bruce and many other Very Experienced & very Knowledgeable Atheists, I sure ain't NO "Liberal" neither!

And hello colonel!

Rather than clogging this thread up. Please eme at religionsucks@webtv.net and clue me in on goats milk and your dislike of oduma.

Me, for over fifteen years, i've drinking daily and when needed, using topically a natural healing "miracle" which is so good, it sill amazes me! And while it is grown in the tropics all around the world and has been effectively used for over 5,000
years to effectivley treat and or cure over ninty
different illness and injuries, most have never heard of it.

Which amazes me as the company i get mine from had sales which were twice what microsofts sales were and they did it in a years less time! It is called "noni juice" and i love it!!!

Thanks

HELLO SusanB-M1,

THANKS for the Welcome!

I am sorry about stealing your being the oldest one status. I would ask you to Please Forgive only I had no more control over my date of birth than I do looking at women. I do wish the ladies would not get mad at us for doing so as we have no choice as it IS the way we are wired., (Well, at least those of us who were born being Hetrosexuals.)

While I can't tap dance I do love to dance and at one times was good enough at it so much younger ladies would ask me to dance with them. (And my being a dirty old man, I loved it.)

Note: to be official (by my standards) the beef actually should be veal, I love the leanness of it - was impressed by the job done in the video on fat removal of the beef. I do use a bit more pepper as well as chipotle or habanero sauce in the mustard - but I do that for corned beef and pastrami also.

I am going shopping this morning and then Doolin ( My Black Lab ) and I have to take one of our fire trucks to get fuled up. as our Fire dept.meeting was getting over last night, the pagers went off ,it seems this 15-17 year old boy ??? Got mad at his parents and went out side and poured 15 gallons of gas around the house, down the drive way and across the road and then tried to light it. Where he lit it, started that area on fire, but thank god it did not cross the road to the house . After we washed everything down the last thing we did was cover everything with foam . when I was leaving I noticed the young lad sitting in the cruiser in hand cuffs.

Well, that's all well and good, since those steel bumpers will tenderize the meat, but where do you hang the meat to bleed it out? And is your spousal unit as enthusiastic about the venison as you are? (I keep thinking that would make one hell of a mess in the sleeper.)

I was lucky, it seems I was always bob tailing home when it happened all I did was call the police they would give me a permit for the deer I would dress it out on the side of the road and then tie it across the back take it home and cut it up and put it in the freezer My wife and kids like it and I made a lot of jerky and my daughters would take it back to collage with them to snack on

This is a great forum. I mean it. I'm happy to be a member (seriously).

I'm Ricky. Last night I finished editing my new videostory, The Big Bang, Evolution, and other Myths, and uploaded it to where anyone who wants to see it can do so. I'm not allowed to post any links yet, but it's on YouTube, so those who want to see it would have to perform a YouTube search.

I have a passion for verismo opera and hockey: the biggest reason I still read the New York Post; they cover both rather well. A few years ago, I did some quick calculations and was surprised by the results. Turns out that in order to publish an ad-free daily newspaper and break even, one must charge about $7 per copy. I guess the list of items that the phrase "you get what you pay for" describes includes the truth, or at least the journalist version of it; which makes it quite a bargain to get decent opera and hockey coverage for only 75 cents.

I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51FKD6LBgeA) is it. I'll watch it later. (Sounds like a bit a swearing in there)

Good luck, have fun, and return here if you have any questions. :)

Greetings Everyone!

I am a long time forum reader, and first time poster. I figure it's time to start actually replying to threads, instead of telling my cat what I think about it. However as a result she is quite knowledgable when it comes to skepticism....
I would also like to know people other than myself at TAM this year :)

Hi, Ketyk.

Foul language is part of life. I'm not particularly fond of it, and only use it where the logic of the narrative requires it, always. Specifically, I resort to it three or four times in this particular story as a ... hmm ... architectonics device. I use a lot more "cuss" words in my narratives about verismo opera.

What I find truly baffling is the fact that many folks (present company excluded, of course) seem to react negatively to obscenities (they can't hear it, they start crying, etc) while COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that the phrase "Oh my God" that pretty much EVERYONE I know uses uses habitually, is a direct violation of the Third Commandment. I hear it dozens of times every day - from people in the street, from my friends, from children (!); it has been astoundingly popular among cinematographers and TV writers since before I was born; and no one seems to object, not even church officials whose responsibilities should include (one would think) noticing such things and pointing them out to their flock.

Enjoy the video!

I mentioned the swearing only in that it may have been NSFW.

Regarding "Oh My God", calling it a commandment sounds so official. ;) "Thou shalt not kill" I take as a general rule of thumb. And unless "Coveting thy neighbors wife" isn't acted upon, then I'm fine with that.

Anyway, here (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=25744) are the important rules.

For the newbies, this forum has an autocensor. Any word that is not permitted is automatically bleeped out. If it isn't bleeped out, then it's permitted. "****" is bleeped out. "Crap" is not.

Just write the way you normally would, and the forum software will take care of the bad words. Trying to circumvent or trick the autocensor by substituting letters is a breach of the rules and you may be infracted for it.

Hi all newer ones!

Axxman, Marine Geology is a GREAT field to get into as our abilites to do it and to mine from the ocean floor has very greatly grown over the last years.

And while I am sure you know more than I on the subject, I do have a little experience in Geology and in the ocean. My Ocean experience is due to sailing on it in many types of ships / boats ect as well having been a Life Guard, Scuba and Deep Sea Diver.

My experience in geology comes from being around my father who was a Harvard Summa Cum Laude Graduate with degrees in both Geology & Mining Engineering.
And he taught at the Colorado School of Mines which is considered to be one of the best in that field in the world. (He did not stay as he would rather be in the field.)

This resulted in my living in mining towns and also listening to my Dad talk about Geology. Plus, one summer, staking Uranium Claims around Moab, Utah.

SO GOOD ON YOU and I WISH YOU THE BEST!

Hi everybody. I'm new, seeking information and perhaps some sympathy. LOL.

I'll post more details in the appropriate topic, but in short, my elderly mother has been taken in by a......quack.

He's a chiropractor, but does very little actual chiropractic. He does things like head tapping (to reset your brain), diagnosis of things like liver flukes, encephalitis, West Nile, and my favorite thing: removal of entities including space aliens.

He's a great man. He cures cancer. He saves lives.

And he performs the best wallet biopsies in town.

Colonel, I actually LOVE goats. The milk, not so much, but I'm not crazy about cow milk either. I just like goats and would have a herd as pets if I lived in the country. And a guard llama.

As I posted elsewhere, I'm trying to decide between going to the state attorney general and licensing board, or taking this to the media first. I guess I could do all three at once and hope it all sticks.

I'm sad that so many people fall for this load, but saddest for my mom.

I'm still not sure if this guy believes in what he does, or if he's a total con man. His daughter went to chiropractor school, and he trained her in whatever weirdness this is. I just have a hard time believing someone would train his daughter to be a flim flam artist.

Hello JREFers!

I've been lurking on your forum for a few weeks now, and it's time to dive in I think. I can't promise to make quite the, ahem, impact that some recent new members posting on this thread have (no names, no pack drill ;)) but I'm hoping I can bring something to the table. I've brought a thermos for the goat's milk as I'm in the Middle East and it gets pretty hot here.

Current woo hobby horses include the impact of religious belief in making people behave badly (for example, the standard of driving here influenced by the concept of "inshallah, it will be all right if I send a text while doing 120kph on the highway - Allah's looking after me"), refuting the "where's the harm?" arguments that people deploy in relation to psychics, and lastly getting fired up about the determination of certain religious factions to erode women's rights over their bodies.

So - Hi :D

Morning everyone. I've been lurking around here for a few weeks and decided that it might be interesting to jump in and become part of the community. A little background - my formal training is in computer science; I'm a programmer by day. My main interest in these forums is in the conspiracy theories section; when I was in high school, before I knew better, I read one of Jim Marrs's books on the JFK assassination and wrote my senior research paper on the conspiracy. Not too long after, I realized what a drooling loon he is, and I've regretted writing that paper ever since. Nevertheless, the analysis and debate over even the most stupid minutiae fascinates and engages me. Since then, my main area of focus has been 9/11 Twoof, which I have studied fairly intensely, but since coming here, other conspiracy theories of a more technical nature have also caught my attention. It's been fun to learn so much about so many things in so short a time.

Hello, I finally joined up. I was at QED Con last month in Manchester England, and chatted in the dead dog party with DJ. Remembered to join after I refound his card.

I attend lots of Skeptics stuff in the UK and am looking to spread it with panels at conventions.

I also attend woo in the pub talks and am subverting some of the more lucid attendees away from the crazy and also get the latest buzz on woo initiatives. I also get to upset some of the speakers with pointed questions, especially the nasty ones.

I have a software/science and gambling history and so I have both the science and trickster elements to my background. In a similarish way to how magicians are tricksters and valuable in our outreach.

Howdy all!

I'm a second generation computer programmer and third-generation science fiction fan, and I've been a fan of JR for over a quarter of a century. I've been browsing the forums here for a while, but never really felt the need to post--I signed up mostly to be able to follow an interesting link into a member's-only forum.

As far as religion goes, I'm somewhere between the Discordians and the Pastafarians, but as a Californian, I feel it my duty to invent religions rather than join them. So far, I've invented three, one of which (involving the worship of coffee) had as many as three members at its peak. (I'm really surprised that one didn't do better--a nice cuppa joe at dawn can be a truly religious experience!)

In general, I describe myself as a polytheistic agnostic, but I'm serious about the agnostic part. There is absolutely no evidence that would convince me of the existence of gods, simply because of Clarke's Third Law: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." On the other hand, I do believe in coffee!

As for other forms of woo, I tend to be skeptical in inverse proportion to how far up the Mohs Scale of Science Fiction Hardness they are. But I still wanna see some hard evidence before I buy any of it.

cheers

p.s. I'm not a fan of goats milk, but if you have any coffee... :)

Um, thank you kindly, but according to these ancient documents I have just hurriedly scribbled down, it would be blasphemous for me to accept your offer. For it is written in the Book of the Divine Bean, chapter 12, verse 5: "No Javacrucian shall knowingly partake of a beverage which pretends to be coffee but is not--unless he or she really wants to." And, somehow, I find myself unable to really want old motor oil.

Hello everyone. I live in Oklahoma and have been a skeptic most of my life. Basically, nothing about religion has made much sense to me. I also grew up in a culture that was thick with faith healers, clairvoyants, ghosts, cryptoids, and dowsers and a general disdain for education. (I was basically disowned when I went to college) I have an annoying habit (at least to people in the community) of questioning "supernatural" events. My wife, who is much like me, just not as vocal, mentioned the JREF as a good resource, especially as I am hoping to begin teaching biology soon. I am not normally this dry in my conversations, but as it's the first one, I figured a simple introduction is the best. (Remember, in Oklahoma, this is a simple intro, I didn't go back 5 generations and mention the barn that burnt down and isn't there anymore, wait that's all of our driving instructions) This promises to be fun, and I am really greatful for an organization like this that I can actually meet like-minded people and not have to keep looking around to see if anyone is listening.

Hi guys (and girls). Been a very long time lurker around here and other similar forums, and I've followed a lot of Randi's stuff for many years. Finally got off my a*s and joined.

A good sceptic is not someone who just doesn't believe anything. A good sceptic is someone who sensibly weighs the evidence from people who are actually qualified to talk about it (eg - too much alcohol is bad for me. I wish I could be sceptical of this, but unfortunately it appears to be correct on the available medical evidence! :) ).

My current beef: American Airlines is actually seriously going to screen an interview from July through August on all their domestic and international flights with antivaxer and serial liar, our very own Meryl Dorey of the "Australian Vaccination Network". Google it. It will make you vomit.

I promise not to post passive-aggressive suggestions that empiricism is flawed because it rejects my irrational belief system, nor to defend that irrational belief system with fallacious arguments and then ignore or dismiss all rebuttals of those arguments.

I've noticed that the 'Blame the Joooos' theme is common in almost every conspiracy. I wonder if these people have ever even met a Jewish person.

I spent two weeks in Haifa when I was in the navy (US) back in '89. All of the people that I met were friendly. A Jewish family invited several of us into their home for dinner having just met us. We were headed back to the ship and a taxi full of locals stopped to give us a ride. We told the driver that we were broke (as usual), and he still gave us a ride.

Anyway, thanks for the beer. :)

Hello all! I'm a near-lifelong skeptic and atheist (in fact, I would call myself a gnu atheist… not sure to what extent that may be controversial in these circles).

My first intro to this stuff was Joe Nickell's book The Magic Detectives. Other than that, nearly all of the books I have read about the paranormal were more on the credulous side, but I could usually figure out what was really going on, and recent Internet reading has helped sharpen my BS-detection skills.

I work for the after-school program of a middle school, where some of the kids are into the paranormal, especially cryptozoology. I don't like getting into arguments with them since I don't want to harm our relationship (or likelier, get into even more frustrating arguments with their parents). Fortunately, the kids themselves are quite good at arguing against the woo anyway; in fact, most of the "cryptozoology club" meetings seem to consist of the kids watching YouTube videos and pointing out how things were faked or played up.

Like all upstanding folk, I believe in "open-mindedness", but I believe much much much more strongly in the faultiness of human minds and our tendency to project all sorts of inner silliness onto the universe, as if reality were supposed to obey the intuitions of a few billion primates. It would take a very, very, very large amount of evidence to convince me that "the supernatural" exists, because of the long history of fakery-and-mistakery, plus my feeling that the supernatural doesn't really refer to anything that logically could exist so much as a kind of set of quasi-dualistic attitudes.

Maybe we've been visited by aliens… but they couldn't possibly be humanoid any more than they would speak Pig Latin. Maybe someone has experienced actual prophecy… but not Nostradamus or any other claimant.* Those are really tiny maybes. Tinier still are the maybes for homeopathy and astrology. Finding out that either one is "real" would be equivalent to finding out the Earth is "really" flat; it's not even imaginable.

I get really frustrated by the self-contradiction whereby woos insist their stuff in in some way untestable. You can't discover anything to be true in the first place if it's untestable! Even the supposed counterexamples they like to trot out, like love, are entirely testable. There are empirical differences between a situation where two people love one another and a situation where they don't. If someone told me that they knew as a matter of faith that Ellen Degeneres loved me, and I said "That's absurd. She can't possibly know I exist, and she's in a committed relationship, and I'm a man and she's a lesbian", would that person be entitled to reply "But love isn't a matter of evidence!"?

Anyway, rant over. Whew. Nice to be here…

*(The eeriest instance I can think of is the incident of that novel "Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan", seemingly predicting the Titanic sinking — but that's probably a Law of Large Numbers thing coupled with a few interdependent facts, eg, if a ship is going to be way short on lifeboats, it will probably be a very large cruise ship, with a "big" sort of name — look at the Titanic's sister ships! — whose makers are a tad hubristic, going too fast, etc.).

At one point, I even entertained new age fantasies and went to a psychic.

Hi Warren. Welcome to the Forum.

:w2:

I'm afraid the answer is that posts always apppear in the order that they were made. Now it's my turn for a question.

Why on Earth would you want to read a thread backwards? Surely it wouldn't make sense to have the answers coming before the questions, so to speak.

Although I have to admit that it wouldn't make a lot of difference in some threads.

Laziness. I don't want to have to click on the little right-pointing arrow to go to the last page.

I'm quite adept at reading posts backward. I've been doing it so long that it seems natural to me. By the time I get to the original message, I'm already aware of what people have said about it. [Some people would say that I've let my mind be infected by other people's thoughts prior to listening to the original thought, but I'm aware of that possibility and I compensate for it.]

Some older versions of this forum software, I think, used to have that option, but I don't see it here. If going to the last unread post doesn't do it for you, the only way I know to get a reverse chronological sort is to begin a reply. At least a portion of the most recent posts are presented in reverse. You can always abort the reply before you post it.

Welcome WerrenGaebel,
Ah I guess great minds think alike. Generally what I do is click on the last page (particularly if it is a thread I’m subscribed to) just scroll down to the end and work my way back to where I left off. In the parenthesis next to the thread title are the thread page numbers hyperlinked to each of those pages. After a number of pages (over 10 I think) have built up the last page will be listed as just, unsurprisingly, “last page”.

Ratcat, your comment reminds me of my friend Lenard (who spells his name that way because that's what his parents did). One reason I like Lenard is that he has lots to say -- and he doesn't say it.

LL, you know that Dante was wrong, don't you? The lowest level of Hell is really reserved for people who deliberately didn't return library books.

I was taught not to believe in the 'paranormal', and I'm quite familiar with James Randi and all...I have a relative who has given talks at the Skeptic society, and would most likely think I'm full of hooey...
So, it won't be that interesting for me.
Of course the paranormal doesn't exist for certain folks. It's just not going to for certain people.

Colonel,

I appeal to you as the most vocal and prolific spokesperson on this thread, as the apparently-official dispenser of victuals and refreshments(and especially of the Belhaven beer, which either has not been delivered yet, or which you have not shared with me; [a terrible gaffe, especially since I was providing it]), and as someone who lived (and may still live, although I don't know that) in Downstate NY. (You may think of it as Upstate, but I lived in Rochester NY for almost 40 years [having moved there as as an adult in order to attend graduate school after having finished my B. S. at Georgetown {and prior to that having spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps}], and I can assure you that the people in that area did [and do] considered the Catskills, and also the Southern Tier [a rural area with very few cities of populations over 40,000, unless one counts dogs and cats] downstate; the only eastern parts of the state that were considered not to have the downstate title were those north of the Thruway and south of the St. Lawrence Seaway [which used to be called the St. Lawrence River shortly before I arrived in Rochester, I think.], and of course east of the eastern end of Lake Ontario [which ends, according to the cartographic community, at Cape Tibbets {itself a very interesting place with a restored lighthouse that is well worth visiting}]).

Ketyk said in one of her posts in this thread that she had never failed to greet newcomers. AFIK, she did not greet me when I arrived, nor to date. As you see, I've been posting enough that by now I would have expected her to notice.

Should I whine and snivel, become insulted, laugh it off, or bear up under the strain?

First I would ignore Ketyk and not worry about her, two I handed out the Belhaven about a week ago at the weekend BBQ. There is still some left and I will put it out at the BBQ this coming Friday

Hi everybody, my names Jim. Like many of you, I think, I came to skepticism the long way (I'd say the hard way but I've not been scammed out of any more than the cost of a few books, or been misled about missing loved ones) and by that I mean I've spent some time making gibberish with gematria (but not corndog), pondering at tarot cards, and trying different faiths on for size. Some children gotta touch the stove. I don't regret it, I learned a lot about how humans think and behave along the way. Most divination systems, especially the I Ching, provide an interesting point to ponder, like an inkblot, if not any real prognosticating power. Early mystic systems often reveal facinating things about our ancestors ideas, and were often the closest thing to reason available. Even homeopathy wasn't so absurd in it's day, when germ theory was less accepted and miasma theory and demonic influence were contenders in the public mind. Well, if I go on like this I won't have much to talk about in the forums. It's good to be on a board where the skeptical outnumber the credulous.

Sounds like as good a route as any to follow, and a lot better than some that I've seen.

Nothing wrong with 'knowing the enemy', as it were.

Most divination systems, especially the I Ching, provide an interesting point to ponder, like an inkblot, if not any real prognosticating power.

That sounds like the way arthwollipot describes the tarot - it doesn't reveal anything so much as it simply allows one to better focus one's thoughts. I think if you search for his name and 'tarot' you'll find his (much better) explanation of the principle.

Early mystic systems often reveal facinating things about our ancestors ideas, and were often the closest thing to reason available.

Absolutely. Astronomy and chemistry are two disciplines that certainly owe a great debt to their mystical forebears.

Even homeopathy wasn't so absurd in it's day, when germ theory was less accepted and miasma theory and demonic influence were contenders in the public mind.

Yeppers. Fortunately though it seems to be becoming the '-pathy of the gaps' and it's to be hoped that the day isn't too far off when it will disappear completely.

I've been an active skeptic for a couple of years. I've written books on urban myths and factoids, been on the board of the Swedish skeptic society etc. One of the fondest memories is when I was responsible for Randis lectures over here in the summer of 2010.

I've been aware of this forum for a long time of course, but thought I had enough to do anyway. Of all the reasons to finally join, I possibly chose the worst: To read about late Curnir, a most splendid fellow I only met a couple of times.

Welcome, Peter. Yeah, Curnir had a lot of friends around the intertubes. I hope I'm remembered even half so fondly when I give up the mortal coil.

We are really rather well-represented in Scandinavia. Must be those long winter nights with lots to talk about and not wanting to go outside and be eaten by killer penguins. (I seem to also not be able to escape Scandiwhatsits, personally. I arrive here in Pattaya and there are Swedish restaurants, Danish social groups, Norwegian real estate companies... I think there's even a Finn living up the block from me,... er assuming you're back to allowing the Finns to call themselves Scandinavians again.)

Welcome aboard. I believe I recall the JREF referring to you guys as one of the groups able to pre-test for the challenge (or was that Switzerland - us Americans are a little thick when it comes to geography) and any friend of Randi's is a friend of mine.

Yes, the Swedish skeptics society VoF are prepared to take on challenge pre-tests. We've been there twice, I think. No passes so far (surprise).

Actually, on conferences we sometimes swap tags with Swiss colleagues and welcome people with Swedish chocolate and Swiss aquavit etc. Very few reactions so far.

I’ve been in here reading for years, and thought it was time to join up. At work I am surrounded by Christian conservatives. As a liberal atheist I am treated like an exotic zoo animal (who of course is in desperate need of being born again). I discovered the very bastion of socially conscious liberal types, that welcomed atheists with open arms. So yes, I tried the Unitarian Universalist Church. They pride themselves on their tolerance. That is pretty much the only requirement for admission. Yes there were a few atheists there, and quite a few agnostics, and I like singing. But at the first meeting the woman of the left expounded the wonders of having your chakras balanced by a practitioner of some sort she wanted me to visit. The woman on the right was really into the healing powers of crystals. I found I was not tolerant enough to be a UU.

I discovered that there was a local group of atheists that met regularly, surely they must be my long looked for people? At the first meeting the woman on the right was talking about the dangers of the New World Order. She said, “it must be true, I read it on the internet.” (Truly the only thing wrong with the man on the left was that he was extremely boring and kept trying to pick me up.) Anyway I found that “atheist” doesn’t necessarily mean rational.

So, here I am, still somewhat bruised but looking for a little virtual companionship. Are you “my people”? We shall see.

Ah, this is a variation of the Foolmewunz Interwebs Theorem.
> You/I have likely come across fifteen thousand people in our lives (pro-rating for longevity, location, gregariousness, etc... pay it no mind it's a figure I pulled out of my butt, anyway).
> Of those, the sum total that I count as "friends" is about twenty people. In addition to those twenty, there are maybe eighty acquaintances (e.g. people who I've deemed worthy of my tolerance).
> That's it. 100:15,000

Now why would one assume, knowing that ratio, that you could join a group, any group, and find more than one acceptable acquaintance out of each 150 you come across. Yet just because we have something in common (Hey, you got a modem, I got a modem - let's get married! Or, alternately... Wow, I don't really believe in an omnipotent being either, pay no never mind to the fact that I'm a complete idiot.)

Having said this, be assured of the thought that His Pharoahness was expressing: Don't be surprised if a lot of us are jerks, too.

Welcome aboard. While most of them (note that I'm not including me) may be jerks, you'll find decent conversation and not much tolerance for woo. And, well, as to trying to pick you up? Well, just don't get into an elevator with a guy who offers you coffee. That gambit's already been used. (You also don't mention if you're male or female... if you're female, it's a given - you will be hit on. Poor things just can't help themselves. :D )

Hey, welcome aboard, Star. I see you've already read enough to know that you can go to the Anti-Humor sub-forum to ratchet up your post count. That's generally good advice for people wanting an avatar, but if you have important research (hell, all YouTube is important) looked into, just go start yourself a thread, post the YouTube location in simple text (throw in an extra space so that the net nannies don't simply refuse your post) and mention that you're a newb and someone will help parse the link for you so that it's viewable.

(It's not that we're necessarily either nice or helpful - we just can't get enough of YouTube research. There are always a couple of dozen debunkers lurking around just dying to take on the newest woo.)

And, good that you're staying around. We need another squirrel for the stew new members. It keeps some of us older newbies on our toes. (I daren't refer to myself as a senior or long-term member. One of The Ancients of Old will be along to make fun of my puny 17000 posts and mere six years on the forums.)

Welcome, Enigmanaut what part of Philly. My parents grew up in Philly and though I grew up here in the mid-Hudson valley we’d spend quite a bit of time in Philly visiting relatives. Once, I guess, they thought we were old enough to kick out of the nest (all of legal drinking age) then did it the other way and moved back to Philly, leaving us poor kids here. So I still get down there from time to time to visit relatives.

Ah, “an amateur artist, mostly working on Superhero stuff” and what kind of stuff would that be, their entertainment systems, the layout of their kitchen, how they deal with ‘trash day’ (“Oops, that old spatial discomentater needs to go in the recyclables”), perhaps their laundry? One of the things that always distinguished the ‘Marvel universe’ (or marvel method) from that of DC (particularly initially) was the focus on the mundane yet superheroisticly problematic nature of that kind of stuff. Spiderman just trying to do his Superhero laundry was an interesting sub-story and made him seem more realistic.
