I don't know if that's what it's associated with elsewhere, but up here Mjölnir pendants are closely associated to neo-Nazis, uber-nationalists, you get the picture.
There's a somewhat well-known Swedish punk song making fun of neo-Nazis starting with, "With a hammer around their necks...", as an example of how close those associations are.Good thing I'm not from there, because I know a bunch of pinko liberals who wear them.

Liberal has different meanings in the States and Australia. Over here Liberals are right wing as are the Republicans are in the States. Although lately, the thin line that separates the main political parties here has gotten even thinner.

Hello to all. Another newbie stopping by to say hey.
Looks like a great place here. I found while looking up some physics topics. A long way from understanding it all but very interested.
Also I have been a fan as it were of James Randi for a while now.
As the name may suggest I like both the inane humour and slightly more intelligent stuff as well.
Look forward to many a happy hour spent on here.

Thanks amb, I will pass on the goats milk thanks. I grew up on a farm and used to live on the stuff, nasty after taste :-) lol
The Millers sounds perfect though.
Just really started looking around and very much enjoying the Free-man-on-the-land thread. A couple of my friends are being hooked into it and I need the counter arguments to be able to suggest their possible errors hehe
Anyhoo, gonna enjoy that Millers and head out to work.

Hi all,
My name Alex. I read the forum for some time. I'd like to participate in it from now. My native language is Russian. I live in New York. Came to skepticism 2 years ago. Mostly listening "Rationally Speaking" and "Skepticality" podcasts. Impressed by reading book "Don't Believe Everything You Think" by Thomas Kida. Still reading "Flim-Flam!" by James Randi.
Look forward to talk in forums.

Hi everyone! Long time Randi fan, first time poster. Looking forward to actually participating in these forums rather than just reading them. I'm a big-time skeptic and a non-theist. I have recently started coming out of my skeptic/anti-Religion closet in my terrifyingly right-wing, anti-science, new-Earth, anti-gay, Christian community. So far it's been a mixture of terror, mind-boggling-ness, and just all-around fun. Nice to meet you all!

Welcome, The Sibelian, and good luck with your "coming out," though Southern California doesn't really sound like a terrifyingly right-wing place. ;)
Have you met any other skeptics/atheists in your area? Meetup.com (http://skeptics.meetup.com/) is a good way to find local groups and they can really be a support.
The Sibelian
30th August 2011, 02:45 PM
Yes, thankfully it's just SoCal... it could be a lot worse... but we do have Orange County, world-famous for its conservative reputation! My little world is full of incredibly right-wingers though. Plus I have a HUGE family out here and they are all incredibly conservative Christians.
I have recently been reaching out to skeptics and atheists in my area as opposed to just meeting them online... and I've never been happier! It's nice to be among people who think for themselves and embrace science and rational thought. I've been getting into more and more debates with conservative Christian friends and folks and I'm actually enjoying it. The more I argue with them the more I realize that (so far) they don't really know or understand what's in that holy book of theirs. I've taken some classes in college on the subject and I've read many books about the history of the church and the bible... and it's absolutely fascinating! It's amazing how much they DON'T want to hear about the history and content of their book and religion! What a way to live!
Thanks for the link! I'll check it out.

Dammit! I want my cow's milk and water for a drink, so I'll just start bringing them with me. The vegetables and rabbit meat sounds tasty though. I have no idea what Kangaroo meat is like, so I'd love to try it. And... just pass a few of those apple and pecan pies over and no one will get hurt.
That said, I'm a totally random, in the sense that I prefer believing in determinism and that nothing is truly random, person who's ended up here. And by person, I'm just going to arbitrarily expand that description to any sapient species and use a dragon as my avatar, probably, for the fun of it. We'll see whether I last around here or not. If not... It's probably because I didn't have a steady supply of milk.

Welcome, Stoat.
Is holocaust denial really given a prominent place here? My understanding was that discussion of it was kept to one moderated thread (and there are only a handful of those). That thread is in the Conspiracy Theories subforum, which attracts some really misinformed and even disturbed posters (and some brave ones willing to take them on). Discussions in that place are so out there that many posters--including me--rarely venture there. We really don't miss much.

Good day skeptics!
Not much too say other than I am a skeptic (I think?) who was introduced to the skeptical movement about 1982/83 while working in a tabernacle to female anatomy.
(See my post today about Psychic Nikki.)
I'll mention briefly my introduction to skepticism/atheism;
I was reading a publication called "The Plain Truth" magazine - my boss noticed and asked me a few questions about the magazine and what it was about it that appealed to me.
IIRC I told him I was looking for truth...or certainty...or something like that?
A few days later he dropped by and gave me a well worn paperback book called "African Genesis" by Robert Ardrey. I put down my "Plain Truth" magazine, started reading Ardrey's book and never looked back.
Nowadays I pass the time challenging those who deny evolution (under the pretext that it is nothing more than a "religion") in the back room of an on-line forum dealing with a certain Kawasaki motorcycle known as a ZRX1200R.
Cheers!

I think the reason is that for every holocaust denier on this forum there are many other members with a lot more knowledge, who are able and willing to counter arguments and provide evidence the deniers are wrong. That serves an educational purpose. We'll likely never convince the deniers they are wrong, but hopefully will educate lurkers and others seeking information (you may be surprised how high the JREF forum comes up in Google searches for woo and conspiracy theory beliefs).

Hey all. My name is Ian and I'm a paralegal from Ohio currently living in Western New York. While I'm not an expert, I've always loved conspiracy theories, so you'll most likely see me in that section or the politics section if at all. I haven't had much involvement with the skeptic community aside from reading a few issues of Skeptical Inquiry, so I'm still a newbie when it comes to other aspects of skepticism such as cryptozoology, alternative medicine, UFOs, ect.
Also, brief explanation of the screen name. Just to be clear, I'm not a supporter of psychics at all. I had the name on another message board because I'm a huge bad movie fan and Plan 9 from Outer Space, though slightly overrated*, is in my top twenty. Though he is hilarious, the Amazing Criswell is not nearly as awesome as the Amazing Randi.
* Or is it underrated when speaking of so bad it's good movie?

Welcome Criswell, yep that’s how it usually starts. Reading is one of those innocuous ‘gateway’ activities that all too often starts one down the inescapable path of unbridled skepticism. Next thing you know you’ll be thinking critically all over the place (what a mess that can be). If only there was some way to nip this reading monstrosity in the bud before too many of our youth are beguiled by its alluring charms. Guess that’s why we have public schools.
Welcome everyone.

Ah, but that film was intentionally funny. The truly sublime laughs come from films that are dead serious. To put it in a way a skeptical audience would appreciate, Killer Tomatoes is like Mr. Deity, while Plan 9 is like a Jack Chick comic. And no offense to Dalton and company, but Chick is only about ten billion times funnier.

Why shouldn't you?
Do you know that the person you are talking to is not honourable?
Has that person insulted you, or have they just asked for information?I find the insistance of providing a link to be insulting as it is more of a demand than cordial conversation.
This same hostility is found in the overall treatment of forums in general and is a common error among forum users : the assumption is first made that the forum should be bad because it has something to do with Rome, which should be judged to be bad, then, ultimately, all ethics and morality can then be discarded.
Such is the mentality based in insane hatred found at these sites :

Hi, I'm Alex (Al). I live in the northern part of San Diego County in California. I found the forum researching the validity of the 2009 paper by Jones et al regarding their findings of a nano-thermite signature in dust samples from the 9/11 attacks. I'd been involved in forums back in 2003-04 discussing various conspiracy theories related to the 9/11 attacks. With the 10-yr aniversary there was a resurgence of these discussions on forum I visit and the above referenced atricle was linked. I'd read about a previous sample finding from 2003 from Jones that Ryan Mackey had debunked on his 9/11-Myths site. I thought this new paper was likely in the same vein but wasn't having much luck finding a specific rebuttal until I happened upon a thread on this forum where Sunstealer had posted an analysis he'd done. I found the information useful and browsed the overall forum a bit. What I've seen I liked and decided to become a member.
My guess is I'll be more of lurker than a poster for the early going; but only time will tell.

Hello,
My name is tom and I am a theist (I'm not sure what this word means exactly - but something about being a believer in more then we are presented with through our senses). Have you guessed my path yet --- the senses line --- I am a meditational yoga practioner.
I have a few science degrees and am not anti science. When I was a kid I obtained from somewhere an "Amazing Randi" poster and hung it up on my bedroom wall. For some reason it held a fascination for me. I don't really study scriptures much - western or eastern, though I am aware of some of the stuff in them.
As a practioner on this path action is paramount - not outer action but inner action, meditation, moving energy up and down the spine. I was/am a skeptical person by nature - but I always held out with the, "if you can prove it to me...." type of reasoning. When a few things happened in my life (age 33) I began my full investigation into the "real" meaning of everything around me. Your forum seems open to reasoning and logic. Anyway it is good to put one's beliefs out there every once in a while to see how they register.

Off the top of me head, check out Rolfe, Lothian, Architecht.... I'm sure there are a goodly number that others can name.
*can't say "Scotsman" because at least one is a female.
Oh, and if you follow Rugby (a painful pastime in Scotland, I know) we have a great thread over in "Sports" that's been running for years. A wee bit late for the pool, but you can always celebrate mourn their resounding victory embarassing thumping against Argentina this afternoon. Lothian will be in there handing out the champagne crying towels, I'm sure. (No, I'm not a Commonwealther - the location is a coincidence - I'm a Yank.)

New here. All my life I have been a cynic, but I realize that it is far more useful to be a skeptic, so I am reading everything I need to make that transition.
I have joined a rationalists group, and I love their lectures/discussions, but they are not partiers. I would love to find a rational group of late night partiers.

G'day all, another here from Oz (Hunter Valley, NSW)
I'm a Freemason and I run a masonic forum (The Quarry Masonic Forum) where I have criteria of both credibility and civility. I'm proud to be associated with an institution that grew with the Age of Enlightenment and has, behind the rituals which may seem odd to non-masons, the rationalistic philosophy of that age (a large number of its early members were Fellows of the Royal Society).
While my forum is selective and kept on track, I am frustrated that many on-line masonic discussions elsewhere are hijacked by Conspiracy Theorists, some of whom are masons and should know better.
I look forward to your help in addressing some of their often bizzare theories and hope I can modestly contribute to discussions here.

Hello everyone, my name is Aran and I go by the username of mrmagnetoman88. First and foremost, I apologize for not introducing myself immediately upon signing up to this forum. My username was inspired by my fascination over the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. The main reason I've joined this forum is because I really love Science, particularly Physics. I think Science is a truly magnificent tool that is used to pursue the truth about our universe and scenarios that occur within it, debunk myths and establish facts. Apart from Science, I love working out, socializing and watching professional wrestling. I look forward to posting, responding, making friends, establishing a good relationship with them and enriching my knowledge of Science. Thanks!!

Hiya all:)
Norwegian gal. Middle aged (yuck!)
Started reading about chemtrails and almost fell of my chair of laughter! Then on the same forum the 9/11 conspiracies showed up. I found these ones almost as entertaining as the chemtrail ones. I work in ATC, and because of that I saw loads of flaws from the so-called "truthers".
In addition I read this guy´s blog that were full of tails of him being harassed by the Norwegian police - they stole his bicycle seat so he couldn´t get to the post office, they "faked" construction in his building to keep him awake.... A plane with a red nose (Norwegian Airlines by the looks of his own "surveillance" photos) was spying on him. The more of this stories I read, the more curious (and full of laughter) I became. So I started to check out debunking sites, that I knew had better ways and a lot better vocabulary - especially ´cause most were English speaking and I am not (and way more partient!!) to tell these folks that they were wrong....dead wrong. And also in some cases - kinda nuts.
Anyways; coming here and reading the post from you guys has thought me a lot - words, expressions and very plausible explanations. Thanks!
Minne.

I live in isolation on Lamma! How about you?
I'm in Kowloon - near the Olympic MTR (I assume they'll eventually call this neighborhood "Olympic". We've got the MTR station, three "Olympian" shopping centers, and no one can even remember what it was called before, now.) Moved out here from Mid-Levels then Wanchai when the son came along (my avatar - Marcello).
I'd love to live on Lamma - but I hate commuting and I put in ridiculous hours at work, so for me it would be gruesome. (I'm on one of those lah-di-dah expat contracts so don't have to worry that the rent would pay off the debt of several small banana republics - the company pays it.)
Welcome aboard. We ever-so-rarely get a forumite passing through town and I think we have a couple of other members here, but they're very infrequent posters. I've always surmised that it's not the paucity of skeptics in Hong Kong nor even the prevalence of Woo,... it's that we're all too busy screwing each other out of money to be arsed with anything else.
By the way, I'm an American. I just affect certain colonialisms so that I can get away with attrocious spelling.

This place looks like a resource for much that I discuss. Although I really should stop taking on 9/11 twoofers in forums. It gets so repetitive.
But after reading Dutch's website of pseudoscience, I looked for something a bit broader.
Environmentalism, energy, etc are subjects I also often discuss, but again I should move to different subjects rather than discussing the same thing all the time.

Do let us know when you find evidence of bigfoot. I can't hike without either seeing footprints or finding scat that can't have come from a known species. Toss in some UFO stuff and hieroglyphics and go for a trifecta.

Thank you for your kind offer, but my mother warned me about accepting milk from strange goats.

Hi Super.
Love the name. It, like, means a bunch of different stuff.
I was inspired by seeing a Meerkat at the zoo, sitting with his legs open showing off a pair of enormous balls and thought "what a super meerkat" and the name was born.
Do let us know when you find evidence of bigfoot. I can't hike without either seeing footprints or finding scat that can't have come from a known species. Toss in some UFO stuff and hieroglyphics and go for a trifecta.
I've got some great proof of Bigfoot that I discovered using MSPaint and Google, and it's dynamite. Unfortunately, I can't add links to things until I reach my 15th post. But trust me, it's conclusive and everything. Based on what I've seen so far, especially from SweatyYeti, this is cast iron and it's up to you to prove that it isn't. La la la la la la.
I Am Who I Am

Hello, my Forum Name is currently: I Am Who I Am
My real name is Daniel Nicolas Martin, Age 20 from Windsor Ontario.
I consider myself to be a Theorist, in both the Real World and the Paranormal, but it's especially the Paranormal is the reason why I'm here talking to you right now. For the better part of a Year and a Half I've been participating as a Forum Psychic on Prophecies.us under the Alias of Ryan Nicolas Radcliffe, and just recently on Spiritual Philosophy and Practice.com under the Alias of I Am Who I Am
I am here because I am seeking Public Opinion and Scrutiny on my Work as a Forum Psychic on these 2 Forums. The purpose is not only just to look at what I've done and for you to provide your opinion, but because you are the Forum People of JREF I ask of you to come up with any ideas as to how I could be tested for the $1 Million Challenge and/or if I even should.....
Feel free to go to those websites right now and see for yourself what I have available (Please note that on Prophecies.us only my last 200 of my 631 Posts can be looked at due to a limitation issue, on Spiritual Philosophy and Practice.com this is very new and recent and will be easier to look at.), however I would like to share with you the Links of what I consider to be "Confirmed Hits" I've had, but due to what I got in the e-mail when I signed-up ( *For the first 15 posts you may not post links to external sites.
*No avatar or signature option until you have made 50 posts.) I doubt I can do that so if an Administrator can fix that please I would like to get straight down to business.....
I'm also joining you guys because I need a change of pace. Simply put, working with just Spiritualists and Psychics can become very biased and single-minded, and it's time I work on "the other side of the equation" so to speak.... I want to learn and understand from your guys perspectives so that I can become more whole-minded and collected in my knowledge, experience, and understanding. I've been the Psychic and the Paranormal Theorist, now it's time for me to be the Skeptic and the Scientific Theorist.
Thank you and Enjoy, I look forward to what you guys have to say, and I look forward to working and collaborating with you!;)
P.S I sent an e-mail earlier this week to Banachek JREF, and I understand that it's alot of work to go through those links and that you want me to apply to the Challenge, but until I can get a working Printer that wont be happening anytime soon (not even my Public Libraries will do it, I've already tried they keep having technical issues......?), also I've been keeping this a Secret form my Family on their behalf due to Social Issues so any Publicity or Actions on my part would be a problem for now. Plus I already tried getting the opinion of College/University Profs for Opinions but they don't want the involvement so that part's busted, and the Medical Opinion is also a no-go due to Trust Issues and Poor Medical Practices (I don't trust them, they don't have a recent good track-record in Windsor.) and I have no means like Money or Support to get a Plane ticket to get to you guys anyways so that just sucks....and besides, All I really want for now is Public Opinion from some Clear-Minded Skeptics and people who know how to look at Forum Postings, that's why I'm posting here in the JREF Forums! Rest Assured though, if there's good common-sense and proper grounds for actually testing whatever it is I've been doing all these years, I'll take the Challenge (Call me greedy, but that 1-Mil's looking really good right about now.....*Haz-evil grin and ideas.....mua-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaa:D) because I think I might be able to win it if there's an actual way to do it that's not crazy and stupid, and that I'm not crazy and stupid.....*nuf-said!

Wow, I Am Who I Am (may I call you I Am, or IAWIA?),that's a super-long Welcome post. I am not the best person to answer all your questions, but I'll try to give you some pointers on what might be of the most interest to you.
First off, theories are great. But in my mind, they are opinion. You will be asked to provide exidence of any psychic ability. Don't expect that anyone here will follow any links that you say are proof. I suggest your first step is to read a bunch on the Million Dollar Challenge.
Like the JREF Challenge FAQ, which I suggest you read in its entirety:
http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/1m-challenge/challenge-faq.html
You might want to read some of the other applicants for the Million Dollar Challenge:
http://forums.randi.org/forumdisplay.php?f=43
And you might find some interesting discussions dealing with Geneal Skepticism and The Paranormal:

Now I am someone that needs a Smithwicks, when does this threads bar close?

I assume this place is probably much like I imagine and there aren't too many artists (save for myself and now apparently Londonleistone) - is there a place that would be appropriate to perhaps show and tell a bit of artsiness? I promise some skeptic-related treats, as well. :q
Welcome, ologies. But be careful with that assumption. The joint is filled with BS Artists. :)

What the heck, no fresh recruits all weekend?
I think we need to start infiltating the known hangouts of woo-minded associations.
Maybe I'll go to Salem in a few weeks.

Salem MA. It's awesome during Halloween. I can actually get myself just scared enough to have it be exciting.

I have friends who live a few blocks from the museums down town. I've never been there for Halloween, though.

You should try to visit them some year. All the accomodations are booked this year no doubt, and are pretty expensive anyway.
There is a lot a fun things to do:

Some friends and I would drive up or take the train, all dressed up. One year I went as a WWI doughboy, carrying a real training rifle (wood and metal and bolt-action, but not possible to be modified). The police weren't happy.

Well of course the police were not happy, MA is a anti gun state It's not like VT. or NH were you can open carry. any time of the year at night Salem is a little scarey
