Are there any good value (or even free) paint programs out there?
I have fond memories of DeLuxe Paint on the Amiga which was really intuitive to use (especially the brushes, animated ones too!) - is there anything available today which works in a similar way?

GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) maybe? It depends on your needs.

And you couldn't Google this?
Within 2 clicks I found software with this description
XXXXXX is a 256 colours bitmap paint program like Deluxe Paint on Amiga. it supports many bitmap format like PNG,IFF,BMP,GIF. It is ideal for doing game graphics especially for GBA, mobile phones or PDAs. XXXXXX is freeware

Within 2 clicks I found software with this descriptionGrafx2 is only 256 colours - OK for some game graphics but not what I'm after.

You found Grafx2 but you did not find GIMP?:boggled:
Ah so, you want to be spoon fed with the answer...

Ah so, you want to be spoon fed with the answer...No, I'd like someone who has actually used the programs to let me know what they think. That would take, oh, about as long as typing a sarcastic reply ...

Oh, is that what you asked? I seem to have mis-understood what you meant

Not sure about the third (it's not something I ever do) but the first two are posible.

GIMP is all I use for photo editing. The few times I've tried to use Adobe Photoshop, it has driven me crazy. The GIMP interace is "intuitive" to me. Adobe's is not. More a question of what you're used to.
If you want to get artistic, you might want to look into a vector graphics program like Inkscape. Much easier to edit what you've drawn.

I want to make a simple rectangle with a border of 2 pixels with GIMP and I don't find it that intuitive. ;)
How do I do that ?

How do I do that ? Select the square marquee tool from the Photo Shop Tools Palette, click and drag to create a rectangle. From the "Edit Menu" select "Stroke" (my favorite menu option btw), enter 2 in the pixel dialog box... oh wait, "gimp"? Isn't gimp a pejorative-slang term for handicapped?

Use the rectangular selection tool and select your rectangle. Go to the "Selection" menu and click "Border." Set border width to 2 pixels. Select the "Bucket fill" tool and fill the border with what ever color or pattern you need.
The cool thing about this method is that you can use it on any selection type. The drawback is that it goes around the outside of the selected area. If the selected area goes to the edge of the picture, then your border will be outside of the picture and you won't see it.

geni and MortFurd - thanks, I've just installed GIMP and stared to play around with some photos. Looks like I've found a new way to waste time...
