Errors in the State of the Union address

In his last State of the Union address, Bush said that Saddam was trying to buy uranium for the purpose of making an atomic bomb. Later Rice, Cheney, and even the State Department's fact sheet discussed this as well. And of course, one of the justifications for the second Gulf War was that we have to stop them from making these types of weapons.

However, those assertions about the uranium have been shown to be wrong and there is a good article about it in today's Washington Post. It also discusses the wider problem of the Administration being provided with data that supported the pro-War arguments and not providing data that would support the anti-War arguements.

However, a senior CIA analyst said the case "is indicative of larger problems" involving the handling of intelligence about Iraq's alleged chemical, biological and nuclear weapons programs and its links to al Qaeda, which the administration cited as justification for war. "Information not consistent with the administration agenda was discarded and information that was [consistent] was not seriously scrutinized," the analyst said.
