Left hand side, let's see... Europe? Losing Afghanistan.
Asia? Losing Afghanistan.
Latin America? Losing Afghanistan.
US? The chick who took the picture of the Cruise baby?! Stop the presses!!

I think it pretty well sums up the (lack of) intelligence and culture in our country.

America is the land of opportunity. If you take pictures of celebrities (or the babies of celebrities) you become a celebrity yourself.

I looked at the covers this morning and I didn't comment because I just didn't know what to say. I presume covers are chosen for being eye catching as well as putting a point over and to help sell the magazine so OK lets say for commercial reasons they didn't want to run with the picture of the Afghani man (and I'll set aside as to the reasons why that was considered a better commercial decision?).
However why on earth run with such a visually weak cover? Surely there was a better picture they could have ran with?
Just on aesthetic grounds I think it was a crap decision!

It boggles my mind that people actually care about celebrities.

Before you go down, don't forget to apply your iQ Triple Action Face-Lifting System. It's smarter than Botox! Complete with transparently fraudulent before and after shots.

By the way, beating up on the US is much more popular outside the US than inside -- where all they'd do is stir up a hornet's nest of response, possibly harming sales and leading to cancellations.
In other words, it's more an issue of Newsweek being cowardly than it is the US population being vapid. We shall see...

I don't know that the article is really beating up on the US. It seems to be pointing out a legitimate concern. Also, I don't know if this article really would harm their sales as a result of angered readers. It all just seems a bit odd to me.

Are there different press times or days for the US editions?
I know they can vary across editions and some magazines have recently changed their dates.
If the US goes to press earlier, then the photo may not have been available.

It appears it was intentional. Also, its not the first time they've done this:

In February 2005, the weekly newsmagazine featured a photo of an American flag in a garbage can in the Japanese-language edition that did not appear on the U.S. or the international editions.
