Flight Arriving and Departing times to TAM

Well, since tim went and started it, I guess I'll open a new thread on this topic. This is to post your arrival date, airline flight and time so you can (1) maybe meetup and grab a cab to the hotel together (2) mooch off of somebody getting a rental car or (3) appeal to my good nature as semi-official airport shuttle service to meet you at McLarren Airport.

You can also post when you plan to get in by car, rail, or Frozen Bowel Movement (an Icy BM, of course...)

Departure times you can add or not, nobody wants to see you leave.

Anyway, to start:

I arrive Wednesday, 17 January at 11:22AM via Delta Airlines Flight 1689 from Atlanta.

I depart on Tuesday, 23 January at 12:25pm on Delta Airlines Flight 707


Tim and Lynn (to repeat his data) are arriving Wednesday, 17 January, at 1:30PM. As my Expedia-fu is strong, I have deduced they will be aboard Virgin Airlines Flight 43, a popular choice with British JREF'ers, as it is a nonstop and relatively cheap.

Anyone else an early flight booker?

I am currently planning exact times. But the basic gist is to Leave from Dallas on 17th in the morning to LAS. Then Depart early evening form LAS to DFW. At this point it looks like American Airlines. I'm gonna do a bit more reading, hopefully I can find somebody arriving about the same time and we can rideshare.

I love those places, been many times. I hit them when I drive to the Grand Canyon. I am gonna assume that you will be taking pics. Try to hit Painted Desert when the Sun is low to get some good light.

Although the shuttle bus will likely be around half the price of a cab (especially since the Riviera is all the way on the North end of the strip), it may be worth it to you to go with the cab option, at least on the way back. Here are some things to consider:
1. Time.
The shuttles wait until they are full or as close to full as they feel they'll get before departing.
The order in which they drop people off is not always in your favor. You could be the last person to get dropped off at your hotel (more than an hour later).2. Planning. You need to call and schedule your return trip, making sure that you'll have enough time to get to the airport and through security.

They will only wait for you for a couple minutes -- I think 3 -- but they can be late -- up to 10 minutes IIRC. In other words, if you call for a 10:00 pickup, they could arrive at 10:00 and will only wait until 10:03, but you have to wait until 10:10 before they're "late". Since you don't know how accurate their clock is, you have to be early. Last year I offered to tell the company how to improve their scheduling, at my normal consulting rate, but they didn't accept.

Wow, lots of things to consider. Though I have budgeted in extra time into my itinerary I don't want to use it "touring" The Strip with my bags. Maybe bribery via alcohol would be a viable option to encourage a ride from a JREFer. :D

I would note for early arrivers...checkout time in Vegas is usually 12N and rooms are not available until after 2-3PM normally, so you'll have to leave your bags with the Conciergne (sic) for delivery to your room.

Seriously, a lot of us like to come in Wednesday, meet up during/after putting together the packets, and do a little bit around Vegas before the meeting starts. Thursday is a fine day, but for many of us we're already seeing old friends--and making new ones.

Just look at what he is having to do to join us at TAM:

1. A 3.5 hour trip on a Russian airline I have never heard of (Transaero).

2. An overnight in Dubai (hope you got a hotel--if you have a spare $900, you might see if the Burj Al Arab has a vacancy..)

3. A 7:45 hour trip to London, followed by a 5 hour layover, then a 9:30 hour trip to Vancouver. Counting boardng and arrival, that's a nice 26-hour trip.

4. An overnight in Vancouver , although I doubt that AH's body will know what time it is.

5. Another two flights with a connection to Vegas, that should only be about 8 hours or so counting airport time.

I've travelled widely. I have even survived three prop-plane trips in Africa on the same day. But you could not pay me enough for that trip.

I hope your company is allowing you to fly Business Class, at least, AH.

I think a US TAM and a European TAM would be the way to go. Many Americans that might attend a TAM in the US might not be able to attend one in Europe for a variety of reasons (not wanting to travel that far, plane tickets too expensive, etc.) and I am sure that the same is true for Europeans wanting to travel to the US. Separate US and European TAMs would solve that problem.

Please, no Europe.

Is the 40% cause or effect? As a Californian, I know of two people who went to TAM3 only because it was easy to get to. I went to TAM2 because I could drive there.

Your first two examples were people suggesting that people in the US might not travel to Europe to attend TAM due to the distance, pointing out that this distance is what keeps some Europeans from attending TAM in the US. They were not examples of people in the US complaining about driving or flying a few hours to get to TAM.

Your third example was a poster explaining that he appreciates his ability to drive a few hours to get to TAM, so it actually handily disproves your point.

If that's the best you can do, I have no choice but to assume that you were just trying to take another random swipe at Americans without providing any evidence to back it up.

What is the situation with respect to driving tanks in the US? I know that you can drive a tank on UK roads, and you often don't need Tax or MOT, as many of them are of WW2 vintage.

I'll be driving in from Salt Lake City on Thursday. I expect that'll I'll arrive around 3:30 or so Thursday afternoon -- just enough time to check in and then find my way over to the Riv's poker room for the TAM tourney.

I'm heading home sometime in the early afternoon on Sunday - probably around 1:00 pm.

I grew up in the Las Vegas area (Class of '87 from Boulder City High School) and I'll have a car during the conference - so that may be handy information for anyone who wants to get around town.

Hmmmmm. Maybe that's why they said I'd be "On" the airplane rather than "In" it. Ducttapped to the nose or something? Flight schedules get changed- haven't seen any "correction to your trip" mailing from Travelocity, but that's no surprise.
Look for a guy with a blue softsided carry-on and a small red teardrop backpack. Odds are that would be me.

Note - my partner will be with me, so don't look for me travelling lone-o solo.
