for windows xp.
The one I have is ok, but I suspect I could get my porn and other pics to look even better with a newer pic viewer, but alas, the one's I search for all just give a free trial version but then require cash.
Under the philosphy that paying for porn (or things required to view it) is unamerican, can anyone recommend a good free pic viewer?

AC nails it - Irfanview all the way!
Seconded.
It can view just about every file type & convert between many of them. Some simple editing in the program. shrink, enlarge & crop. All in a program that can fit on a floppy disk.
Awesome program.

Irfanview is good, but is more than just a viewer. If you really just want a viewer , apart from Windows itself, have you looked at Picasa?

many printer manufacturers and digital camara mans. have tools that can be used for the same purpose and they are shipped with the hardware. so one way to get them would be to visit the web site for the manufacturer and download the distribution cds similar to downloading drivers. these files are usually in the same download areas. All you need to do is install the software afterwards. Most of these tools don't really need the hardware that it was meant for to get some functionality out of them.
However I would read the software agreements before using them so you don't get in trouble. OK this was my disclaimer.

I needed a decent picture viewer too (no default one with Win2K) and I only had CDisplay, which sucked. So far I'm liking this Irfanview. Thanks!
