Mark Cuban, who knows a thing or two about making money, says one would have to be a real idiot to buy YouTube because of all the potential lawsuits for copyright violations.

But they did:

A fair bit of the copyvio situation can be worked out a deal to lisence music videos but $1.65bn. That is seriously high for what is pretty much a brand name.

Yeah, but what does Google know about smart business decisions and the internet?:D

I'm curious to see what they do with it.

Cters are on to it already:

What worries me is that I have witnessed Google meddling with the ratings for certain videos (I'm guessing to prevent another 'Loose Change' before the US elections) and I find this very sinister.

This actively distorts popular opinion (and I'm all for making your own mind up).

Same for YouTube? I hope not.

I love YouTube, but I've always wondered how on earth they pay for all the bandwidth they're using. Just look at the top 5 most viewed videos of all time, they've been downloaded 33, 16, 10, 9.8, and 9.6 million times each (respectively). YouTube obviously makes money off of banners and advertisements... but were talking like hundreds of terabytes of traffic everyday.

Well, that explains how Google will pretty easily make money off of youtube:
1. Anything that can be downloaded 33 million times can probably have follow-up versions that can be sold
2. Maybe Google plans to ride the cheaper bandwith curve to profitability with these.
